Many things can wait; the child cannot. Now is the time his bones are being formed and his mind is being developed. To him, we cannot say tomorrow; his name is today! - Gabriel Mistal Many things can wait; the child cannot. Now is the time his bones are being formed and his mind is being developed. One premise in a differentiated classroom: “ In this class we are never finished--- Learning is a process that never ends” “ In this class we are never finished--- Learning is a process that never ends”

RAPID ROBIN / The “Dreaded Early Finisher”

“I’m not finished” Freddie / “It takes him an hour-and–a half to watch ’60 Minutes’” / “It takes him an hour-and–a half to watch ’60 Minutes’”

To Tier or Not to Tier… / What is my objective? / Is it likely that my students have varied readiness levels with regard to this objective? / Are there multiple ways to approach this objective? / What is my objective? / Is it likely that my students have varied readiness levels with regard to this objective? / Are there multiple ways to approach this objective?

An Example in PE Skill: Dribbling in basketball Tier 1: Dribble from point A to B with one hand, switch hands and repeat, develop a new floor pattern (not a straight line) using either hand. Skill: Dribbling in basketball Tier 1: Dribble from point A to B with one hand, switch hands and repeat, develop a new floor pattern (not a straight line) using either hand.

Tier 2: Dribble in and out of cones as quickly as possible using one hand, change hands and repeat, increase speed. Tier 3: Dribble with one hand while another student plays defense, increase speed, trade roles Tier 2: Dribble in and out of cones as quickly as possible using one hand, change hands and repeat, increase speed. Steps in Tiering: 1) Identify your objective(s). 2) Preassess students. 3) Design an activity that focuses on the objective(s). 4) Design additional tiers as needed. 5) Assign students to the appropriate tasks. 6) Be flexible! 1) Identify your objective(s). 2) Preassess students. 3) Design an activity that focuses on the objective(s). 4) Design additional tiers as needed. 5) Assign students to the appropriate tasks. 6) Be flexible!

Questions to consider as you tier… / Am I really sticking to my original objective OR have I gotten off track? (BE CRITICAL!) / Is each of the tiers respectful of my students? / How should students be grouped? / What management considerations do I need to think about? / How can students who have completed different tasks share their work and learning? (Closure) / Am I really sticking to my original objective OR have I gotten off track? Example: Theme in Romeo and Juliet Tier 1: Create a collage using current magazine pictures that demonstrate the themes of R&J at work in the present Tier 2: Create a one-page news bulletin that summarizes the events of R&J that best illustrate a theme of your choosing. You must also address a current event that incorporates the same theme.
