Plant Classification Josh Seelbaugh

Bryophyta Common name: mosses Seedless nonvascular Damp forests Other mosses: They grow close to the ground, and are able to grow in harsh conditions Reproduce asexually

hepatophyta Common name: liverworts Terrestrial and freshwater environments Seedless nonvascular Have a photosynthetic gametophores Undergoes meiosis to form spores two types of liverworts: the moss-like, thallose and leafy hepatics

Anthocerophyta Seedless nonvascular Common name: hornworts found worldwide in temperate and tropical regions on tree trunks, riverbanks, and other damp locations Use spores to reproduce Other species include: coontail, and Phaeoceros

Lycophyta Common name: club mosses Not true mosses, because these are seedless vascular plants. Lycophytes are the oldest extant group of vascular plants, and dominated major habitats for 40 million years. Some can live in wet tropical rainforests, commonly damp environment. Usually evergreen, and reproduce sexually with spores. There are about 1,200 species today in three lycophyte families: Lycopodiaceae, Selaginellaceae, and Isoetaceae.

Pterophyta Common name: ferns Seedless vascular plant Still depend on water for reproduction, but a vascular system allows for these plants to grow up off the ground. Have fronds instead of leaves. The underside of fronds produce spores This phylum contains 11,000 living species You can find these plants in semi-damp environments. Other plants include: bears paw fern, and sori of golden polypody.

Cycadophyta Common name: cycads An ancient group of seed plants that have compound leaves and a stout trunk. Tropical and subtropical regions Sago palms is another plant belonging to this phylum Cone bearing seed plant which reproduces sexually with seeds Grow slowly and live very long

Ginkgophyta Also known as “seed ferns” or ginkoes They have a slow reproduction rate and reproduce sexually by seed "male" buds are typically grafted onto seedling roots to produce "male" trees for ornamental use Found in china They have distinctive fan-shaped leaves and numerous spur shoots that bear the reproductive structures

Coniferophyta Known as conifers Conifers are a group of around 588 species of trees Most trees in the Cypress family bear scale like foliage and have cones that have only a few scales Juniper, Giant sequoia, coast redwood, and yews are common plants of this phylum These plants are found in most habitats around the world from deserts to your back yard. With exceptions to tundra and tropical rainforests Reproduce sexually

Anthophyta Largest group of plants Named the flowering plants Oaks ivy and grasses are part of this phylum Nearly all of our food comes from flowering plants grains, beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices almost all come from plants with flowers, as do tea, coffee, chocolate, wine, beer, tequila, and cola. Reproduce sexually Seeds are found in the fruit
