What It Looks Like (Characteristics) It’s the largest animal ever to live on earth. A blue whale can be up to 100 feet long. Blue whales can weigh up to 150 tons. That’s 300,000 pounds! A blue whale’s heart is as large as a small car. Fifty people could stand on a blue whale’s tongue. A whale’s nostrils are on the top of it’s head and are called blowholes.

Where It Lives Blue whales are found throughout the world’s oceans.

Life Cycle The average life span of a blue whale is 80 to 90 years. Blue whale babies stay inside their mothers for one year before being born. They weigh 3 tons (6,000 lbs) at birth and are up to 25’ long. The babies drink their mother’s milk and gain up to 200 pounds a day.

Food Chain Blue whales are the largest animals on earth but they eat very small shrimplike creatures called krill. An adult blue whale can eat up to 4 tons (8,000 lbs) of krill in one day. Blue whales have few predators but are sometimes attacked by sharks and killer whales.
