CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS P. Shaw and P. Crouail (EAN) R Paynter (EUTERP)

EAN WORKSHOPS Objectives of EAN Workshops Exchange feedback – Different stakeholders Aid the implementation of ALARA in practice Identify issues for further research and developments Provide conclusions and recommendations

Aims of the Rovinj Workshop To consider how education and training programmes: – Can be delivered effectively (and be optimised?) – Can improve radiation protection in practice – Can disseminate ALARA culture To bring together stakeholders – to exchange practical ideas and experience – to identify further improvements – to produce recommendations

Issues and themes from the Workshop Oral Presentations And Posters

1. ALARA Culture and E&T ALARA Culture – involves ALL stakeholders and all exposure situations, eg – Managers, contractors, supervisors, workers – Regulatory authority, designers and suppliers Education and training – Focus on RPE, MPE and RPO (planned ES) – Focus on academic and technical skills, rather than “soft skills” (leadership, communication, human factors…) Is training optimised?

2. Competence and ALARA Culture COMPETENCE KNOWLEDGE (education) PERSONALITY ATTITUDE APTITUDE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE (experience) ALARA - less important HUMAN FACTORS SOFT SKILLS - More important - VERY IMPORTANT

3. Culture before training 1.CULTURE: A LEARNING ORGANISATION – Acquire, create, build and exploit knowledge – Include and motivate 2.TRAINING: STRATEGIES AND OBJECTIVES 3.DELIVERY: ACTIVE LEARNING METHODS – Interesting, engaging (relevant) – Problem-solving and practical work (realistic) – Participatory (trainee to trainee) 4.COMPETENCE 5.CULTURE?

4. Training strategies and outcomes Training MATRIX for different stakeholders: Define objectives List desired outcomes Knowledge and understanding (KNOWING) Skills and application (DOING) Competence and reflection (THINKING) Identify method to assess effectiveness and identify improvements (feedback) Engage with education experts

5. Optimising training Effectiveness (delivering outcomes) Written tests, assessments Work-related benchmarks/KPIs Doses? Incidents? Other? Qualitative and quantitative? How to assess ALARA culture? (social scientists) Efficiency (time and money) Tools (remote learning, VR, etc…) Increasing financial constraints?

6. Other issues Harmonisation (EQFs, ECVET) vs diversity – Recognition of competence Requirements for training providers – ISO 29990: 2010 Training the trainers Training content and stakeholder involvement New training tools and tracking learning Training for abnormal situations Refresher training, continued learning

Dissemination of Workshop conclusions EAN and EUTERP dissemination – Website and Newsletter PAPERS NEEDED! – To partner organisations, societies and networks – National Journals (UK, France, Croatia, other?) Further actions? Follow up?

Hvala! Thank you
