Health Sciences Information and Internet Health Sciences field is rapidly changing. Critical to stay abreast of the latest medical technologies, news, innovations and discoveries. Internet is a good resource for health science information.

Is the information credible, accurate and of superior quality? Who runs the web-based health resource site? On the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Web site, for example, each major page clearly identifies NIH and includes a link to the site's homepage. (.gov;.edu;.org;.com) Who pays for the website? It costs money to run a website. The source of funding can affect what content is presented and how it is presented. For example, is it sponsored by a drug company with a proprietary interest in the information presented? Is it paid for by advertisers? Is it a government-sponsored website? What is an Annotated Bibliography? It is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. It is useful for the researcher creating the bibliography as well as later researchers who may follow the same or similar path.

Purpose of an Annotated Bibliography? Summarize : may merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? Assess : or evaluate the source. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? Reflect : How does the source fit into your research? Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic? Source: Annotated Bibliographies. Purdue Online Writing Lab.

Martin BC, Chisholm MA, Kotzan JA: Isolating the cost of osteoporosis-related fracture for postmenopausal women. a population-based study. Gerontology 2001; 47:21-29 Medical costs accelerate as aging populations experience osteoporotic-related health problems. Medicaid and Medicare expenditures for femur fractures in women ≥50 years of age are about $3,300 each, and per-case costs for all other fractures are $1,300. Costs are highest in the month of fracture, with baseline trends returning within a year. Administrative claims of 765 Medicaid eligible women aged ≥50 years were analyzed at the University of Georgia in All subjects had experienced a fracture, and 226 had a femur fracture. A time series design was used to determine the economic impact of fractures. Sample Annotated Bibliography
