NEXT-TELL TRAINING Virtual worlds – OpenSim Module C: Virtual World’s Pedagogy Presenter

WELCOME ! Today you will learn … OpenSim, Module C – Virtual Worlds Pedagogy how virtual worlds can be used for pedagogically meaningful learning purposes what needs to be considered if using virtual worlds in your classroom

7 added values for learning in virtual worlds © Christel Schneider, ICC © Gerhilde Meissl-Egghart, talkademy

1) Huge global meeting place Almost every real world community has its community in e.g. Second Life => whatever you want to learn - go where the experts are! => whatever you want to do - find people with shared interest built-in SL search engine Second Life destination guide

2) Alternative learning environment Classroom settings are newly defined... What feels right for which situation? How does the teacher / student feel in the new environment? What effect does it have on the learning/ teaching?

3) Emotional & Social Impact 3D worlds create an emotional and social impact (much more than 2D conferencing systems!) the brain doesn't a make a difference between experiences in virtual worlds and in real worlds => the experience might be virtual, but the emotion is real !!! Sorry! Paris!

4) New / Alternative identity Who am I? Some people keep changing their looks - others don't. Appearance seems to become part of the new identity: Often totally different from the real world - sometimes it is just the same. It is easy to hide behind your avatar (suggestiopedia). What should be different? How do I want to be seen by others?

5) Collaborative working environment deliver topics for communication +++ foster participant‘s involvement and teambuilding combine language work with real interest +++ create real value +++ results to be proud of In 3D worlds, you can do more than in a 2D classroom or conference solution: You can CREATE something together: videos, comic books, exhibitions, buildings,... projectbased language training

6) Real-world simulations many, many great examples, e.g. kitchen fire medical procedures (birth giving) Haptic tele-rehabilitation for stroke patients ship navigation training for emergency task forces

7) The imagination is the limit Virtual Hallucination An educator's dream comes true: any educational environment we can think of, can be realised no physical limit no (almost) financial limit

object-driven vs. people-driven scenarios object-driven learning happens by interaction with objects (e.g. Genom-island, Spoland) „prepared environment“ expensive building! people-driven learning happens by interaction between people (e.g. meet native speakers, expertes, peers from partner schools, …) environment acts as „facilitator“ (e.g. talkademy‘s „voting stage“, quiz-games) giving context (e.g. canyon that needs a bridge) giving atmosphere (e.g. office for job interview) we prefer it integrated: learning happens by interaction between people AND environment !!! OpenSim, Module C – Virtual Worlds Pedagogy

Language learning in virtual worlds Huge global meeting place => meet the natives The imagination is the limit Emotional & Social Impact => natural but still safe Sorry!

courses (e.g. talkademy, languagelab, avatarenglish,...) Language training in Second Life Object-of-study... Place-of-study-course learner driven... teacher driven language communities (e.g. Cypris Village, Virtlantis) self-learning environments (e.g. Mi Casa, British Council Island - Quests)

Field Trips Mi Casa Sherwood Forrest (British Council) le/119/192/40

Types of Scenarious used in Language Learning game shows expert consultingmixed reality events project work role playfield trips

USP: only immersive worlds make you feel being together as a team in an online media youtube.com/watch?v=es2IBXDKc_w student work: „Granny“ youtube.com/watch?v=Hk2uN7fIh4s exhibition & experience : „Holocaust“

the „learning stack“ language training intercultural collaboration project management crafting (e.g. video production) co-learner actor / facilitator subject matter expert learner coach / mentor learner (team 2) „payload“ topic (e.g. climate)

How to keep your students engaged autonomypurpose team real live impact reputation empowerment

Example: Chatterdale mystery with a partner school OpenSim, Module C – Virtual Worlds Pedagogy

To:field team Subject:search for missed person, *urgent* Team, we've received a contract to look for Prof. Jones. Our client, his aunt, lost contact with him in Chatterdale. He told her that he wanted to uncover a big mystery there (uncovering mysteries is his hobby). Go there IMMEDIATELY ! Meet your other team members at the POLICE STATION and check what the police knows about Prof. Jones. Send a report and invoice (including expenses) with all the details about your investigation every day! Mr. Chief Quest in OpenSim the Chatterdale Mystery
