SOUND! SOL 5.2

Sound is ENERGY Sound is transmitted by waves. All sound is a vibration.

We measure Sound! Sound waves can be measured. Sound waves are compression waves.

Wavelength Wavelength is the distance between waves. If the wavelength is long, the sound is very low ( bass ) If the wavelength is short, the sound is very high ( treble ) This is often called the pitch of the sound. Wavelength is also called compression.

Medium Sound waves travel through a medium. The medium that you hear most sounds through is air. Sound travels at different speeds and distances through different medium.

Amplitude The height of the sound wave is it’s amplitude. Amplitude is simply how loud or soft a sound is. Amplitude is volume. As you get older, your voice changes and the amplitude becomes lower. You’ve heard this word before if you’ve ever had an amplifier or had music amplified.

Matter Sound waves affect matter in different ways. A high amplitude and wavelength sound can break glass! Some matter is a conductor for sound, allowing it to pass through. Other matter is an insulator of sound, preventing it from passing through by absorbing the sound energy. This is called soundproofing.

Tomorrow… Bring a rubber band to class. We will be doing experiments with sound! The speed of sound is 761 mph at 1000ft.
