The Man God Favors Isaiah 66:1-6

Introduction God takes an interest in man (Psalm 8) Need to be thankful

Introduction God favors some people –We know what it means to give and seek respect –God wants our allegiance –Won’t force us

Humble (Poor In Spirit) See ourselves as God sees us –Proud person overestimates –Only the humble sees correctly –Neither Calvinism nor pride is right

Humble (Poor In Spirit) Humbled are blessed –Theirs is the kingdom (Matthew 5:3) –Take a lesser seat (Luke 14:11) –God hates a proud look (Proverbs 6:16-19)

Humble (Poor In Spirit) Examine ourselves –See our true condition (2 Corinthians 13:5) –Use God’s mirror (James 1:22-25)

Contrite (Broken, Penitent) Hard to fathom God’s level –Greatness does not prevent His concern (Isaiah 57:15) –He seeks to revive the contrite (Psalm 34:18) –We must be genuine (Joel 2:12-14)

Contrite (Broken, Penitent) David –“Man after God’s own heart” (2 Samuel 12:7; Acts 13:22) –Why? A contrite spirit (2 Samuel 12:13; Psalms 32:1-6; 51:1)

Contrite (Broken, Penitent) Now required to repent –Let godly sorrow work (Acts 17:30; 2 Corinthians 7:10) –Worldly sorrow leads to death –Change our wills to conform to a change in our hearts (Romans 12:2)

Tremble At God’s Word Extremeness of not trembling –Jim Jones threw the Bible to the ground –Many who condemned him showed no respect for God’s word either –Fail to do what we know is right (James 4:17)

Tremble At God’s Word Saul (1 Samuel 15) –Clear and simple instructions (vv. 2, 3) –Failed to follow them (vv. 7-9) –Made excuses (vv. 15, 21) –Condemned (vv. 22, 23)

Tremble At God’s Word Can’t “get around” God’s commands –Obey even without every detail (Psalm 119:120, 161; Philippians 2:12) –To deny plain commands is to fail to tremble at God’s word

Conclusion Are you humble? Are you contrite? Do you tremble at God’s word? What is your condition today?
