connect communicate collaborate Background The energy consumption of the Internet is exploding increasing number of devices connected to it continuous expansion of networks explosion of traffic volume fuelled by video and mobile data applications ICT sector accounts for more than 2% of global carbon emissions. Energy expenses constitute nearly 25% of the total network costs. Carbon footprint restrictions with increased emphasis on corporate responsibility. The energy consumption of the Internet will be one of the main challenges that technology will have to face in the future. First step is to measure – Then, act to reduce consumption and emissions

connect communicate collaborate Tele-working – UNI-C study results UNI-C trail to support „SMART 2020” claim: Public Danish emission factors are used:  Car – 175 g CO2e / km  Bus – 90 g CO2e / passenger km  Regional train – 42 g CO2e / passenger km  Metro – 16 g CO2e / passenger km  319 kg in 5 weeks scales to about 3 tonnes per year for 30 employees  Each Dane emits about 10 tonnes of CO2e per year  3 tonnes is a 1% reduction of the 300 tonnes for 30 employees  The SMART 2020 claim is ½ % of the “business as usual” estimate of year  UNI-C study thus supports this claim  An extra gain of this study has been to raise the GHG emission awareness of UNI-C’s employees

connect communicate collaborate 15 Management Systems - PSNC According to ISO having an environmental policy and establishing a baseline GHG account “may not be sufficient to provide an organisation with the assurance that its performance not only meets, but will continue to meet, its legal and policy requirements. To be effective, they need to be conducted within a structured management system that is integrated within the organisation”. IT systems in large organizations such as Universities are of complex nature and typically utilize many elements to provide the service, such as: Network infrastructure: Network infrastructure: PoE switches, routers, firewalls and others. Servers: Servers: hardware, virtual machines, terminal servers, clusters and others. Storage and backup: Storage and backup: RAID arrays, SAN devices, tape storage and others. Software: Software: databases, application /web servers, user applications (as ERP, CRM, Business Intelligence systems) Voice infrastructure: Voice infrastructure: softswitches, phone system, PSTN gateways and others. Power consumption is an important part of OPEX.

To set targets for efficiency and for use of carbon offsets based on the data available on the reports To increase the uptake of services which are based on or which generate carbon reduction effects, such as virtualisation, tele-working, videoconferencing. To further develop NREN insights and practices on Green IT, so that others may benefit. To “push” NRENs to improve energy efficiency in networking and computational infrastructures.
