Winslow Jr. High School Turnitin

What is Turnitin?  Isn’t a tool for checking originality? Don’t we use it to detect plagiarism?  Don’t the teachers already do this?  Isn’t this more time-consuming for teachers?

Professional Development  All teachers participated in a webinar to learn about the program and what features are available  Does more than just check for originality  Can be used in multiple content areas, not just ELA classes  Saves time in grading  Important tool for feedback

Feedback is the Key  Puts the process back into the writing process  Allows for quality writing assignments across the content areas  Promotes collboration between content areas  Encourages inter-rater reliability through use of the rubric

Features of Turnitin (Observed)  Quality feedback by teachers is possible because of time-saving features  Detailed explanation of grammatical errors  Accessibility to all teachers  Same amount of rigor/reliability between content areas  Promotes dialogue and collaboration between teachers across the curriculum

Next Steps…from the Survey  Teacher feedback indicates the importance of the availability of technology, preferably daily and in-classroom access, especially in CORE areas  Program is fairly simple to use  More time with the program is needed to learn fully about the benefits  More professional development regarding use of the grading rubric is needed  Teachers must have basic competencies in computer technology and online programs
