Year 5 History

  The events that happened in the 1800’s were significant to the development of Australia as a nation.  By exploring these events we can discover how the events of the past have shaped Australia as it is today.  This knowledge of the past can help guide us in our future journeys. Introduction

 Your research presentation will include:  the key question that you will pose, and at least three sub questions that you used to guide your research.  the timeline of your character or event.  your point of view on what happened, how you would have behaved in the chosen situation, and why.  a page of references Task outline

  Your presentation will be on a Weebly.Weebly  We will go through how to set one up in class.  The Weebly will allow you to interact with technology to produce an informative and interactive presentation.  Your Weebly must have a page for references, usually the last page. Weebly

  To guide your presentation and research you will need to pose a key question. For example, if you chose to research the impact of the explorer Charles Sturt your question may look like:  How did Charles Sturt’s explorations impact on the colonies?  You will then need to pose some sub-questions to guide you through your research. For example:  What did Charles Sturt explore? What was the immediate impact of this discovery? Did it help the colonies? What future implications where there of this discovery? How might this have effected the growth of Australia as a nation? Who were the other significant people that impacted on this event? Key Question

 When researching you can obtain your information from a variety of sources. Some of these are primary sources of information and some are secondary.  Primary sources are documents or artefacts that were produced at the time of the event happening. This means that they are more reliable. Example – A handwritten diary of events, even if it has been reproduced.  Secondary sources are documents that have been put together at a later time, such as a biography. Most of the articles that you will find online are secondary sources, but many have reproductions of primary sources. Primary and Secondary Sources

  A timeline is a list of events or happenings in the order in which they occurred. Another way of saying that is to say that they are in ‘chronological’ order.timeline  See the example on the History Noticeboard  There are a variety of ways to do timelines, research them and decide the best way one for your topic.   You may choose an event or person from the below list or you may choose one of your own. Remember we are looking at the impact on colonial times in the 1800’s.  Before proceeding, you must show me who/what you want to investigate, and its relevance. Topics

  The Victorian gold rush was a period in the history of Victoria in Australia between approximately 1851 and the late 1860s.gold rush  During this era, Victoria dominated the world's gold output. Ballarat for a while was the richest place on earth in terms of gold production. Gold Rush

  The Eureka Stockade was a gold miners' revolt in 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The miners were protesting against the officials who were supervising the mining of gold in the region. Eureka Stockade  It was prompted because miners thought that mining items were too expensive and that the police were not giving everyone fair treatment. Eureka Stockade

  Edward "Ned" Kelly (c. January 1855 – 11 November 1880) is Australia's most infamous bushranger. After murdering three policemen, the Colony of Victoria proclaimed Ned and his gang wanted outlaws.  At a final violent confrontation with police at Glenrowan, Ned Kelly was captured and sent to trial. He was hanged for multiple murders at Melbourne Gaol in 1880.confrontation Ned Kelly

  In August 1860 Robert Burke and William Wills set off to cross Australia. They had with them 16 men and enough supplies to survive for two years.Burke  They went exploring to discover what there was in the middle of Australia.  There journey was unfortunately net with tragedy along the way.   Caroline came to Australia in the late 1930’s. She arrived as the wife of a British soldier. Caroline  Once in Sydney she saw the poor conditions that many people had to live in.  She became a pioneer for women who could not look after themselves. Caroline Chisolm
