Manifest Destiny—It held that the U.S. was blessed by God and destined to overspread the North American continent and expand its boundaries to the Pacific Ocean.

Texas Who went? Stephen F. Austin and the “Old 300” Why did they go there? Were guaranteed a very large unit of land How did they get there? By using the Santa Fe Trail What did they find when they got there? Native American raids, angry Mexican leaders Moses Austin received the 1 st land grand in Texas but died before he could take settlers there

The Alamo -187 Texan fighters vs. 6,000 Mexican troops -The Texans had low supplies of ammunition, clothing, medication, and the hope of more help was not going to make it. -Lasted for 12 days -Remember the Alamo became a rallying cry for the Texans -All 187 Texans as well as 1,500 Mexican troops died at the Alamo.

California Gold Rush -The discovery of gold along California’s American River set off a gold rush that brought thousands of people into California from all over the world. -Two men John Sutter & James Marshall discovered gold. -More than 80,000 people made the journey to California in They became known as 49ers -Very few of the miners achieved lasting wealth, and most people found little or no gold.
