British Gymnastics Volunteer Programmes

Currently British Gymnastics offer two different volunteer programmes.

MY Leadership Academy Developing leaders to support your clubs

What do we know? Older gymnasts enjoy ‘helping others’ (participant modeling research) Giving gymnast’s the opportunity to develop as leaders will increase retention Young leaders don’t realise what opportunities there are for them within the sport

What do Young Leaders want? Young Leaders want a challenge Young Leaders want to have responsibility (or to feel like they do!) Young Leaders like to be recognised Young Leaders want a sense of belonging

What is a Leadership Academy? A group of Young people aged 11+ Usually a formally constituted group with a bank account Members have aspirations to develop as Leaders within gymnastics in some capacity

My Leadership Academy

What is the purpose? Retain older gymnasts and give them extra responsibility Succession planning for the future Train leaders and an introduction to the breadth of roles available within the sport

What do Leaders do? Leaders follow the MY Leadership Academy Programme. The programme has been developed for young leaders by young leaders The programme is designed to provide a structure for leaders to follow which is flexible and can be adapted for each individual

MY Leadership Academy Each leader is given a handbook which they complete at their own pace There are 5 different areas and three different levels Different rewards, awards and recognition is available as each area and level is completed

MY Learning Leaders are tasked with completing a number of different courses, both generic and gymnastics specific Bronze: 1x gymnastic course 1x generic course Silver: 2x gymnastic courses 2x generic courses Gold: 3x gymnastic courses 3 x generic courses

MY Development Leaders are tasked with identifying a role model and learning from working alongside them Bronze: Identify a role model and complete an agreement form Silver: Complete 20 role model hours Gold: Complete 50 role model hours

MY Volunteering Leaders are tasked with volunteering their time at events, fundraisers and meetings Bronze: Volunteer at 3 events Silver: Volunteer at 6 events Gold: Volunteer at 9 events

MY Future Leaders are tasked with producing a 12 month development plan and completing their goals Bronze: Write a development plan Silver: Complete the short-term goals Gold: Complete the long-term goals

MY Project Leaders are tasked with identifying the need and running a project which benefits their club or community Bronze: Write a project plan Silver: Run the Project Gold: Produce a project review document

Reward, awards and recognition Leaders receive a certificate and pin badge as they complete, Bronze, Silver, or Gold in all 5 areas In addition to this leaders receive rewards as they complete gold in any area: –Free or reduced attendance to conference –Opportunity to observe / work alongside top level coach or official –Attendance at National event as VIP or volunteer –Work experience with BG Staff –Recognition in BG media
