The Four Settlement Attempts By: Sambo

1 st attempt The first Spaniard to explore SC was Francisco Gordillo. In 1521, he and his men were sent here by Lucas Vasquez de Ayllón to explore North America. By this voyage, Spain gained a claim to SC. They were located at Winyah bay, and the settlement was named San Miguel de Guadalupe.

1 st Spanish settlement This settlement was doomed from the beginning. Food brought by the Spanish ran out within weeks. The local Indians were no help. Their leader died in October, so that left the settlement without a leader. The winter was very cold and disease was widespread.

2 nd attempt About 35 years after the Spanish failed at San Miguel de Gualdape, around 30 Frenchmen established a settlement on what is today Parris Island, near Beaufort. In May, 1562, Jean Ribault led this group of French Protestants (Huguenots) to America. when he suggested building a fort, his men enthusiastically supported the idea. Ribault named the settlement Charlesfort in honor of King Charles IX of France. He named the waters around the fort, which is still the name it bears today--Port Royal. This voyage gave France a claim to South Carolina.

French settlement They failed due to lack of supplies and their leader left. When their leader left, the crew thought that he had abandoned them. So they built a ship and sailed back home. While at sea, they ran out of provisions and resorted to eating their shoes and leather jackets. When the leather was gone, they drew lots and the loser was eaten by the others. Before a second man was killed, they were rescued and returned to France.

3 rd attempt Once again, Spain tried to settle in South Carolina. This time they named in San Filipe. San filipe was built on the abandoned settlement of Charlesfort. This settlement survived for ten years until it was attacked by Native Americans; survivors fled to St. Augustine, Florida.

4 th attempt The English founded a settlement at Albemarle Point, which became the first permanent colony (CharlesTown) in South Carolina. The location offered many advantages to the settlers. South Carolina became an economically important colony for the British.

English Settlement English settlement was the first successful attempt at settling in the Carolina colony. Trade with Native Americans was successful. They obtained furs and deerskins from Native Americans in exchange for beads, trinkets, guns and alcohol. Some Native Americans were forced into slavery and were sent to the Caribbean. This ruined a good relationship with the Native Americans. Cattle raised in the colony were sold in the Caribbean. South Carolina pine trees were a source of pitch and tar (naval stores) which the British used for making ships watertight. Rice grown along the coastal areas of the colony became known as “Carolina Gold.”
