Seven Categories of Diseases If we were to come up with 7 groups that all diseases “fit” into then what would they be? You and your partner look at the class room list and come up categories that the diseases would fit into.
1. Disease Producing Organisms Bacteria Strep throat, Lyme disease, Staph infection Parasites Hook worm, round worm, elephantitis Plants Poison ivy, oak or sumac Fungi Ring worm, athletes foot Virus AIDS, flu, common cold, chicken pox
2. Physical Agents Heat Burns Cold Frost bite Electricity Electric shock (can stop heart) Crushing Injuries Broken bones
3. Chemical Agents Lead Poisoning Carbon Monoxide Drugs Tobacco Alcohol
4. Birth Defects Inherited (DNA gene defect) Type I Diabetes Hemophilia Congenital (acquired during fetal development) Cerebral palsy Cleft palette
5. Degenerative diseases in which the function or structure of tissues or organs will progressively deteriorate (weaken) over time, due to normal bodily wear or lifestyle choices such as exercise or eating habitstissuesorgans Aging Alzheimer's Joints Disks MS

7. Neoplasms “New Growth” Tumors: cells that grow in an abnormal way. Benign or malignant
Disease Terminology Acute: Sudden symptoms, may be severe. Short duration. Ex: appendicitis, flu, cold, bronchitis Chronic: long duration (progressive: get worse over time). symptoms may be less severe. Ex: emphysema, arthritis, bronchitis
Disease Terminology Communicable: can be transmitted from one person to another. Ex: STD’s Epidemic: disease spreading fast among many people Ex: H1N1
