Junior Assembly Seneca High School May 11, 2016

How many schools should I apply to? Reach 1-2 Good Match 2-3 Safe 1-2  Think about major, location, size, setting (rural/urban/suburban), extracurricular activities.  Realistic evaluation of each college’s admission requirements (grades, standardized test scores, required high school courses).

Top Factors for College 1.Grades in Courses – Grades in AP, honors, or Accelerated courses 2. Strength of Curriculum – Both the amount of course work you complete in high school and the quality of those courses 3. Admission Test Scores – Scores on either the SAT or ACT (most schools accept both interchangeably) Source: National Association for College Admission Counseling

GPA/Rank All seniors will receive their Rank and GPA in homeroom in September.  Unweighted is on a 4.0 scale  Weighted is on a 6.0 scale Top 15% weighted rank = NJ Star  Transcript reflects weighted & unweighted GPA & Rank

The University expects all applicants to have completed strong college preparatory course work at an accredited secondary school or certified home school program, including at least 18 credits of post-eighth- grade course work in the academic subjects noted on the following chart. The following criteria represent the minimum requirements to be considered for admission. The academic profiles of most candidates exceed the minimum requirements. Subject -- English * Subject -- Mathematics * Subject -- Science Years Required -- 4 Years Required -- 3 Years Required -- 3 Years Recommended – 4 Years Recommended -- 4(2 must include lab) Years Recommended -- 4 (3 must include lab) * Subject -- History/Social Sciences * Subject -- Foreign Languages * Subject -- Academic Electives Years Required -- 4* Years Required -- 2† of same Years Required -- 2 Units Years Recommended -- 4* Years Recommended -- 4 of same Years Recommended -- 2 Total -- 18–22 units * * at least two of the units must be history, and one of those must be world history. An additional year of math or science may be substituted for the 4th year of social science. † Foreign language courses taken before the ninth grade do not count. Please note that: * Prospective majors in mathematics, engineering, business, computer science, and natural science should complete four years of mathematics, including trigonometry, pre-calculus, and/or calculus. * Prospective majors in biology, chemistry, physics and all prospective majors in Engineering are expected to take at least one year each of biology, physics, and chemistry, and are strongly urged to take two years of a laboratory science. Prospective majors in nursing must have completed at least one year of both biology and chemistry, and are strongly urged to take two years of chemistry. University of Delaware high school course requirements and recommendations

Standardized Tests SAT’s- (SAT Reasoning Test) ACT’s- SAT Subject Tests are specific one hour content area tests used by a small percentage of colleges. Be sure to confirm if the colleges to which you are applying require these tests and plan accordingly. Send scores to Seneca High School & colleges of your choice –Four free when you register, but fee later NCAA contenders must send scores to NCAA Eligibility Ctr: 9999 Colleges want official scores which are sent directly from College Board. AP scores must be sent directly from College Board. We recommend that students take SAT’s twice junior year and once senior year.

Colleges I’m thinking about…

College Visits/Interview Visits Take campus tour Visit library, cafeteria, dorms Talk with students The Interview This is a good way for schools to know YOU and not what is on paper. (Not all schools grant interviews.) Be yourself- there are no right/wrong answers. Be able to state why you are interested in that particular school. Stop by for an unofficial transcript before you go * College visits/interviews are excused with a letter from the college on school letterhead.*

RCBC Spring Ahead Program * September – Fill out the RCBC application * December- Attend RCBC informational meeting at Seneca. January- Transcript request form due to registrar * February -RCBC placement tests at Seneca. Exempt if scored 540 in Critical Reading and/or 530 in Math on SAT; 23 Reading and/or 20 in Math on the ACT (Must have applied and sent transcript by January in order to take test) * May -Trip to RCBC to register for classes (Must have completed application & placement test in order to attend)

Technical/Career Schools Schools that recent Seneca graduates have attended: Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Lincoln Tech BCIT Rizzieri PB Cosmetology

Military Branches Marines- Army- Navy- Air Force- ASVAB-Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (Military entrance exam) Each branch has required entrance score ASVAB given in November at Seneca

College Athletics Students who are planning to play in a Division I, II, sport need to complete the following: 1. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center: 2.Send official test scores from College Board/ACT to NCAA 3.Send high school transcript to NCAA at end of junior year

Things to do….NOW!! Visit colleges Take standardized testing Naviance-research schools Ask 2 teachers in person for a letter of recommendation and then follow up with a Naviance request. Register with NCAA
