The Case for Blended Learning

Increase student learning and mastery of standards Create and sustain conditions that foster increased productivity in a single class period Meet students where they currently stand (at their current level of performance?) and differentiate instruction based on student needs Use data to plan personalized lessons for students, in both large and small groups or individually as needed Make real-time decisions for instructional next steps Make connections between content that is being taught in the classroom and the real world applications of that content Develop personal learning goals and track progress towards those goals Build the capacity of students to master standards through multiple modalities Foster student attention to personal learning pathways related to individual goals Increase interest in course content by focusing student attention on learning objectives

Card Sort Engagement, Effectiveness, Ownership Using the cards in the packs on the table, sort the activities. Where do they fit? Student Engagement - Does it meet the needs of the student and keep them focused on learning? Student/Teacher Effectiveness - Is it focused on making the most of both students’ and teachers’ time? Student Ownership - Does it give students the skills, information, and tools they need to manage their own learning?

PicturePurpose Plan Part CMCSS Vision and Purpose Picture Students engaged in meaningful, standards based learning in an environment that blends face-to-face, traditional instruction with an integration of technology tools when appropriate. Purpose In order to be college and career ready, students need to be engaged in daily activities that build skills for learning, analyzing and communicating through the use of technology. Plan Create and share a vision, provide training, monitor the implementation and follow up.

Part Digital Blended Learning End of Year One Expectations

District and School Level Leadership Roles Ensure all staff has a clear understanding of DBL purpose and plan for DBL implementation Increase stakeholder awareness of DBL initiatives through communication of purpose and plan Use early adopters to help build capacity of other teachers Increase use of technology to engage stakeholders in learning opportunities Model use of DBL structures when facilitating learning Provide feedback during walkthroughs and collaboration about DBL best practices Identify current state of building and individual teacher PD needs Provide differentiated PD for teachers who are working at various levels of DBL implementation

Teacher Roles Establish routines and procedures for use of technology Encourage student ownership of learning through the use of appropriate technology tools Use student data as a means for differentiating instruction, in whole and small groups or for individual students, using a blended learning model when appropriate Use some online content to supplement instruction Implement resources following professional development (for example - Google Classroom, Screencastify, video based instruction, and social media tools) Use technology tools, when appropriate, to provide timely feedback to students Use classroom space to maximize student collaboration Provide structures for students to collaborate and share information with others through the use of technology

Student Roles Understand and use appropriate routines and procedures when using technology, in whole group, small group and individual settings Access and track personal assessment data Reflect on learning goals Collaborate with others to seek and share information through the use of technology Determine appropriate communication methods for sharing and acquiring the needed information.
