Thermal Hair Straightening

Pressing Temporarily Straightens curl or unruly hair by means of a heated iron or comb Generally lasts until shampooed Press prepares the hair for additional services A good hair press leaves the hair in good lustrous condition; it is not harmful to the hair Chemically relaxed hair should NOT be pressed

?????????????????????? Describe to your partner the term thermal hair straightening Which type of hair should not be pressed

Thermal Hair Straightening Three Types – Soft Press Removes about 50-60% of the curl Accomplished by pressing 1x on each side of the hair – Medium Removes about 60-75% of the curl Accomplished by pressing 1x on each side of the hair using slightly more pressure – Hard Removes 100% of the curl Achieved by applying the thermal pressing comb twice on each side of the hair

Analysis of Scalp 1 st need to assess the condition of the hair and scalp A careful analysis should cover: – Wave Pattern – Length – Texture (fine, medium, or coarse – Feel (wiry, soft, or silky) – Elasticity – Color – Condition of the hair (normal, dry, brittle, oily, damaged, or chemically treated – Condition of the scalp (normal, flexible, or tight)

???????????????????????????? List the three types of pressing Describe what each type is used for List three things gleaned during a scalp analysis

Abuse or Neglect If the client shows signs of abuse or neglect caused by: – Faulty pressing – Lightening – Tinting **You should recommend a series of conditioning treatments!! *Failure to correct this damage can result in breakage during pressing!

Scalp Condition Client’s scalp can be classified as: – Tight If tight scalp and coarse hair, press the hair in the direction the hair grows – Flexible Remember to use enough tension to press the hair satisfactorily – Normal Proceed with analysis of hair texture and elasticity

???????????????????????? Describe to your partner a tight scalp Be prepared to demonstrate how to press a tight scalp Demonstrate pressing a flexible scalp

Service Notes Be sure to always record the notes of your scalp and hair analysis and any pressing you did on the client record form Make sure during the client consultation you question your client about any: – Lightener – Tinting – Gradual colors (metallic) – Other chemical treatments **as with any other service, a release statement should be signed by the client

Conditioning Treatments Important to offer clients effective conditioning treatments, thorough brushing and scalp massage Massage and Brushing help to stimulate better circulation and make the scalp more flexible! A bonus for clients who receive thermal pressing!

????????????????????????? Why is it important to know what products clients use prior to this pressing service? Describe a release or hold harmless statement How are conditioning and scalp treatments helpful prior to pressing?

Thermal Straightening Comb Good quality brass or stainless steel Handles usually wood Wood does not absorb as much heat Space between teeth varies; close spaced teeth: smooth press wide teeth; less smooth

Conventional Pressing comb and Stove

Heating the Comb May be heated in an electric or gas stove – When heating in a gas stove, make sure the teeth are face- up – Keep the handle away from the fire After heating the comb, test on piece of light paper – If the paper scorches, wait for the comb to cool before placing it on the hair

Procedure Shampoo Re-drape Thoroughly dry hair to prevent smoking and burning during pressing Apply pressing oil Section into quadrants; press according to texture and style; temple comb can be used at nape and temples area: moderately warm in these areas Curl if client requests it Gentian Violet jelly: For burns

?????????????????????????? What material is a pressing comb constructed from? What are some important points to remember about the stove or oven? Describe the precautions taken when using an oven

Cleaning the Comb Comb will perform more efficiently if kept clean Wipe the comb before and after every use to remove: – Loose hair and clinging dirt – The combs intense heat keeps it sterile Stove heated comb – Remove the carbon by: rubbing the outside surface and between the teeth with fine steel wool pad or Place the metal portion in a hot baking soda solution for about 1hr Rinse and dry the comb thoroughly Metal will be smooth and shiny again

Pressing Cream or Oil Prepare the hair before pressing Benefits are: – Makes hair softer – Prepare and condition the hair for pressing – Help protect the hair from burning or scortching – Help prevent hair breakage – Condition the hair after pressing – Add sheen to hair – Helps hair stay pressed longer!

Finished Product

????????????????????????? When finished with the service how do we clean the comb? Why do you need pressing oil What is the last thing we do when finished the service?
