Lucy and Ancestry

 Lucy is the name given to an ancient bi-pedal species, discovered in North Eastern Africa of which has evolved over time to become human.  Lucy is significant because her species is the first to be discovered as adapting from life in the trees to life on the ground.

 Lucy demonstrates how a species can adapt to its environment for survival  It is hypothesized that Lucy’s environment changed from mostly Jungle to Savannah (or grasslands).  Her species survived this change because they were able to adapt by walking on two legs, as the number of trees in their environment slowly declined

 What aspect of survival made it necessary for Lucy’s species to walk on two legs? (Select all that apply)  A. Food  B. Shelter  C. Protection from predators  D. Reproduction

 Evolutionary theory states that all humans come from one common ancestor, such as Lucy.  Our ancestors are important because their biological make-up determines characteristics and traits that we are born with. Ex) Walking on two legs

 Traits are characteristics of a human that are inherited from their parents/ancestors Physical Traits Include  Eye color  Hair color  Hair texture  Skin color  Vision/Height Biological Traits Include Ability to learn, diseases that can be passed down from one generation to the next

 Your job is to create a family tree, this can be a powerpoint or google doc or a drawing on paper.  You are required to include 2 physical traits for each member on your family tree, and make sure to use the same trait for each family member.  Ex) If you choose eye color and hair color for one family member you will use this trait for all of our family members.
