home > sitemap > metrics for eco-innovation projects EcoAP Forum-Lisbon 2012 Why system innovation? Identified as an area of interest in a survey of the consortium A cross-cutting activity that is distinctive from any other ERANet Topical subject among policy makers and businesses Potentially a means to achieve deeper levels of innovation faster Well designed interventions focused on tipping points could have a dramatic effect Avoidance of unintended consequences

home > sitemap > metrics for eco-innovation projects EcoAP Forum-Lisbon 2012 The aim of system innovation to break through barriers that are too big for one organisation to tackle on their own creating the conditions for more sustainable business to succeed helping governments shape policy by showing what works and what the barriers are

home > sitemap > metrics for eco-innovation projects EcoAP Forum-Lisbon 2012 The need for system innovation – a business perspective Leading businesses face challenges too big and complex to tackle alone. Increasing business critical issues, e.g. resource shortages, climate change impacts. Companies need to engage beyond their borders, down their supply chains and support the wider system to change. home > sitemap > metrics for eco-innovation projects EcoAP Forum-Lisbon 2012 System (eco)innovation – a working definition A set of interventions (new approaches or new applications that scale) that lead to a shift in a whole system (a sector, a city, an economy) on to a more sustainable or better ecological path. Having the key characteristics of being: Interdisciplinary, multi-faceted: combining behaviour, technology, policy and economy Radical, transformative: creating significant change, using new approaches and applications Collaborative: cross-sector, involving different players, new entrants, new types of partnerships Including whole value chains Designed to work towards a shared eco or sustainability goal

home > sitemap > metrics for eco-innovation projects EcoAP Forum-Lisbon 2012 Eco-Innovera objective 1: “Community of Practioners System innovation is at an early stage of development outside of specialised academic circles, with no formal networks supporting it We expect “champions” of SI to be strongly motivated to share knowledge and encourage others - “cascade mentoring” Three broad roles for ECO-INNOVERA: 1.Sharing understanding Among consortium, partner networks, Commission, others 2.Connecting active practitioners High level forum, motivated by intellectual curiosity and desire to solve complex problems 3.Building and sustaining the community Links through into education/placement programmes

home > sitemap > metrics for eco-innovation projects EcoAP Forum-Lisbon 2012 Eco-Innovera objective 2:Influencing the funding landscape ECO-INNOVERA’s own resources not sufficient to support system innovation implemention at scale or speed. Act as an advocate for system innovation, influencing and leveraging funding from national and EU programmes 1.Map the funding landscape across EU for supporting system innovation 2.Promote an EU-wide standardised approach to system innovation 3.Dissemination of “game changer” projects
