Presentation transcript:

Depression has no single cause; often, it results from a combination of things. Depression is not just a state of mind. It is related to physical changes in the brain, and connected to an imbalance of a type of chemical that carries signals in your brain and nerves. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. Family history. Genetics play an important part in depression. It can run in families for generations. Trauma and stress. Things like financial problems, the breakup of a relationship, or the death of a loved one can bring on depression. You can become depressed after changes in your life, like starting a new job, graduating from school, or getting married. People who have low self-esteem and a negative outlook are at higher risk of becoming depressed. These traits may actually be caused by low-level depression (called dysthymia). Other psychological disorders. Anxiety disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and (especially) substance abuse often appear along with depression.

Abuse Certain medications Death or a loss Other personal problems Substance abuse Serious illnesses Major DepressionMajor Depression Manic Depression Bipolar DepressionBipolar Depression Chronic Depression Unspecified Depression Dysthymic Disorder

Psychotherapy, or "talk therapy", is one of the most effective ways to treat depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that contribute to depression. Interpersonal therapy looks at how depression can be connected to troubled emotional relationships. Psychodynamic therapy links depression to traumas and conflicts that happened earlier in your life, especially during childhood. Group therapy allows you and other people with depression—or people with the same issues that contributed to your depression—to meet together with a therapist and share experiences. Some people also take Antidepressant Medications

Why are you depressed? I was always thinking negative about myself. I had low self esteem. Plus it seemed nothing in my life was good or if it was it seemed to stay only for a short period of time. How did you deal with your sadness? I used to cut myself since I had no one to talk to and no one understood me. I tried talking to my mom but that always ended up with us fighting. *not good communication skills* or I tend to sleep a lot when I feel sad. Guess it's my way of coping with it. How often were/are you depressed? All the time it seemed

At what age did you become depressed? After 5 th grade when my grandmother passed away that’s when it really hit me. Plus entering high school and leaving all my friends who were going to different schools. Not to mention that home life wasn’t easy as well. Parents always on my case about something. Did you take any medication? No because I would have hated it. I heard it made people feel like nothing was real around them. What feelings/emotions did you have? I would be extremely sad to the point I didn’t care anymore so became numb. I would feel like no one needs me, that I’m a burden. Feel like I cant do anything. What do you think helped you over come your depression? My close friends helped me a lot threw my problems. Plus wanting to change for the better even though sometimes its hard.
