HOW TO ANSWER A REFLECTION: Describe = using multiple words together to explain your thoughts Why = support your answer with the reason you feel that particular way Explain = multiple words depicting how something happens NONE of your answers should be only 1-3 words. Sentences are what I’m looking for.

5 minute partner discussion Answer these questions: Did our class atmosphere change from the beginning of the period to the end? If so, how? Why do you or why do you not feel there was a change in atmosphere? If someone was apprehensive to answer a question, what are two factors that would affect this feeling? If someone was willing to answer a question, what are two factors that would affect their attitude? List 2 questions that you heard/answered that most people would have felt challenged to answer and 2 questions that most would have felt comfortable to answer.

Self-disclosure

Defining Self-Disclosure Self-disclosure is the act of making yourself known to others.

Functions of Self-Disclosure Predict the thoughts and behaviors of the people you know. Gain information about another person. Understand how another person thinks and feels. Must be mutual in order for a friendship to work and trust to be built between friends .

Risks of Self-disclosure The other person may not respond well to your disclosure. The person now “has” something on you if your relationship ends. The more you disclose about yourself, the more power you are giving this person. What might they do with the information you share with them The person may feel that you are sharing “tmi” about yourself too early in a relationship. This can damage or end the relationship/or friendship.

Define: Intimate Sharing an emotional closeness with someone Who do you share emotional closeness with? This person can be a significant other (boyfriend/girlfriend) or “B/F/F”. The more emotionally intimate you are with someone, the closer your relationship is. Does this mean you have to get along with them…?

Levels of Self-Disclosure IN YOUR NOTES Create this table & leave space to write: Levels of Friendship Levels of Self-Disclosure 1. 2. 3. 4.

Level of Friendship 1 Acquaintance A student who is in class but you don’t “know them” Friends of friends People that ride the same bus How do you know if someone is an acquaintance? You wouldn’t go out of your way to start a conversation with this person

Level of Self-disclosure 1 Cliche Small talk Rhetorical questions Conversation full of silence Nothing revealed about yourself

Level of Friendship 2 Casual friends Friend who is in your life because you share the same common interest(s) What may some of those common interests be? How you know if someone is a casual friend? You will share the same interests Would you tell them that your boyfriend/girlfriend just dumped you?

Level of Self-disclosure 2 Reporting Facts Reporting the basics Family Structure Information about your house Activities you are involved in Unless feelings are shared little is revealed about yourself If people share too much information too soon, it’s awkward. Hey, man. My girlfriend dumped me…I’m sad. Dude, keep that to yourself.

Level of Friendship 3 Close friends Friends you call to “just talk” Friends you go to the movies with or have come over to your house You share your thoughts and opinions with this friend How do you know if they are a close friend? Can you be together without talking and it still be comfortable? Would you expect this person to be there for you if something bad happened in your family life?

Level of Self-disclosure 3 Sharing ideas Sharing ideas, judgments, and decisions I think Big Bird should be president because I agree with his… I can’t stand that chick in my math class…she was such a snot to Billy Bob yesterday! This will reveal more about who you are

Level of Friendship 4 Intimate friends Friend you would worry about, rather than be upset, if they didn’t call you when you have a “big thing” going on This person can tell you “the truth” to your face no matter how it hurts. This person has your best interest at heart and will help you improve yourself & help you reach your goals. How do you know if they are an intimate friend? Would they be involved with a family issue you are having?

Level of Self-disclosure 4 Expressing Feelings Expressing feelings behind your ideas, judgments and decisions I have been so depressed since my girlfriend dumped me…I’ve honestly been thinking of killing myself. This will reveal the most about who you are and what you stand for…The most is revealed about yourself.
