SDF Conference 2014 Data Collection: Issues and Responses Marie Wilson Addictions Education & Prevention Specialist, NHS A&A Jo McManus Health Improvement Senior-Drugs, NHS GGC

Data Collection: Issues Who?  Supplies, captures and distributes the data? How?  Can we identify and utilize existing systems to collect and share data?  Do we establish new data collection systems?  Do we ensure the systems are used properly? What?  Information is required?  Will be achieved by collecting and sharing this information?  Are the pressing issues in relation to data collection?

NPS Taken How can we capture this information? How can we share this information? What should we do with this information?

Data Collection: From Who? The individual  Where did they get the information?  Is the information they have correct?  Who should/could they tell? Other agencies  What information do they gather?  What can they add?  How do they record it?  How could they share the information?

Data Collection: How? Utilize existing databases:  How do we ensure they are used?  How do we ensure they are shared? Development of new systems:  Who will take responsibility?  Will these systems be compatible with what currently exists?

Data Collection: Why? Purposes of data collection:  Information sharing  Early warning system  Future planning  Targeted interventions  Service development

Data Collection: Issues  Development of systems  Responsibility for the data  Sustainability of systems  Support for staff  Standardisation of collection  Protocols

Data Collection: Responses

When it works  How an issue may come to light  Gathering further information  Investigate good practice  Agreeing a way ahead  Implementing Interventions  Evaluating and Developing

CHEM SEX An Emerging Issue?

Identification Anecdotal reports from partners of new MSM sex party scene Discussion within Drug Trend Monitoring group of who may have other relevant information Agreement to further investigate

Gathering Further Information Contact made with sexual health services and Brownlee Centre BBV Clinic Voluntary Services working with key at risk groups Injecting Equipment Providers

Investigate Good Practice Literature Search Visit to London Drug Clinic Discussions with experienced workers

Local Plan of Action Meeting with all relevant partners Sharing of information on chem sex scene in Glasgow Agreement that this was an emerging issue of concern Discussion of approaches in other areas

Implementing Interventions Agreed approach of upskilling staff within sexual health counselling service at Brownlee Training in Safer Injecting Practice NPS and Drug Awareness training Further information to be gathered and considered

From this….. Partners identify party scene is expanding NEO data shows increase in injecting of NPS Agencies report self reporting of link between parties and NPS/drug use Risky injecting practice identified Plans to establish a Injecting Equipment Provision Site at Brownlee within clinic. Full NEO training and further drug training for identified staff

Proposed Way Ahead Ensure Brownlee fully established Safer Injecting Training for staff at Steve Retson Project Drug Training including NPS for staff Other relevant training identified Planned development of IEP site in Steve Retson March/April 2015 This would give us 2 specialist sites in the city for an identified high risk group

In Conclusion.. This has been an example of how, with good partnership working and information sharing we can react quickly and efficiently to try and address issues before they are out of control.
