Turn and talk to your partner about a special contribution they bring to the class. Just like each classmate brings something special, it took different ideas and cultures coming to South Carolina to make it a successful colony

What do you think? Look at each picture before the information is shown. Based on the pictures, try to predict what each group’s contribution was to the colony of South Carolina.

English First to establish a permanent settlement Established representative government and religious freedom Attracted new settlers by offering them free land Many came from Barbados where the plantation system had been established Brought institution of slavery with them and therefore made South Carolina one of the wealthiest of the 13 colonies

French Huguenots Protestants who were persecuted (mistreated) in Catholic France Wanted religious freedom Started the South Carolina Society which started schools and helped the poor

European Jews Attracted to the colony because of religious toleration (all religions accepted) Established a synagogue in Charleston Contributed to the city’s economic growth

German and Scotch-Irish Settled in the backcountry of South Carolina Hardworking farmers Sometimes scorned by the elite of the coast The proprietors didn’t provide enough protection from the Native Americans, so they asked the King to take control of the colony-he sent a Royal governor
