Misconceptions of Adult Education Completed By: John Armes Post University June 20, 2015

1.Adult Education is the same as primary education 2.If you failed in primary education then you will fail in adult programs 3.The only option for adults is to receive their General Education Degree Common Misconceptions

 Primary Education (K-12) is not the same as Adult Education  Adult Education requires specific theoretical approaches that engage the learners  Adults want to be able to draw from their experiences to better understand the content  Adults need to learn how to be self-directed learners that can continue to learn on their own outside of school Adult Education is the Same as Primary Education

 Research from the Madera Adult School states that adults are more likely to succeed because they are more motivated to seek out education on their own  Once a student leaves high school, school is not a requirement; often times adults who choose to re-enter an academic program are more dedicated and successful If you Failed Before, You Will Fail Again

 Many adults do not understand that adult education encompasses more than just attaining a GED  Programs such as the Turlock Adult School offer programs in English Development, Career Readiness, Technology, and Community Services  Adults need to receive information that informs them of the programs available to them All You Can do is Earn Your GED?

1.Experiential Learning- Learning based on prior experiences 2.Self-Directed Learning- Motivation based; student learns how to research and work on their own to accomplish a goal they have set 3.Goal-Oriented Learning- Focus on an end result; for example, achieving a certificate in a specific subject area What Theories are Important in Adult Education?
