Career resources: What is a physiologist and what do they do? (PowerPoint presentation) Heart health webquest Life inventory sheet: for student’s own information PhUn Week 2008 Day 1

PhUn Week 2008 Day 2 How does exercise affect your health? Lab activity –Students chose an exercise to do and made a hypothesis about their results. –They designed an experiment, got approval, conducted experiment and gathered data –At end, shared results and interesting observations

Visit from Research Host –Discussed the research process –What he was researching –How to get involved as an undergraduate in research –Open to questions Phun Week 2008 Day 3

Ideas for PhunWeek 2009 Concentrate on freshman class Work in cooperation with Wellness Education teachers (gym/health class) Show students connections between biology and human health and fitness Have a health fair for students one day during the week?

YOUR IDEAS? Your thoughts on your ideal PhUn Week Outreach Event in November What do you want your PhUn Week outcome(s) be? 2.What grade level(s) are you thinking of visiting? 3.What kind of visit, presentation, and/or activities (e.g., assembly, classroom presentation, hands-on experiment, demonstration, or others) do you envision? 4.What is your connection to the school (or the physiologist)? 5.Any additional thoughts? 6.What questions do you have?

1.Consider your area of specialty in physiology. Can an aspect of that be developed into an outreach activity? How? At what grade levels (elementary, middle, high school)? 2.Regardless of your research focus, what kinds of physiology- related activities do you think can inspire children’s interest in science and careers in physiology? 3.What do you think are the most pressing needs in science education at the elementary, middle, and/or high school levels? 4.Any additional thoughts? Your brainstorm thoughts on future PhUn Week themes?
