CHAPTER FOURTEEN LESSON TWO BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

OBJECTIVES IDENTIFY THREE COMMON BACTERIAL INFECTIONS AND THEIR SYMPTOMS. LIST FIVE WAYS TO AVOID BACTERIAL INFECTIONS. DESCRIBE ONE WAY TO TREAT BACTERIAL INFECTIONS.

BELLRINGER NAME AND DESCRIBE ONE BACTERIAL INFECTION.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION HOW ARE BACTERIAL INFECTIONS TREATED?

DEFINITIONS BACTERIA ARE VERY SIMPLE SINGLE-CELLED MICROORGANISMS THAT ARE FOUND EVERYWHERE. BACTERIA REPRODUCE VERY QUICKLY BY DIVIDING IN HALF. BECAUSE THEY CAN REPRODUCE SO RAPIDLY, A FEW BACTERIA CAN OFTEN CAUSE A SERIOUS INFECTION VERY QUICKLY. THE BEST WAY TO AVOID A BACTERIAL INFECTION IS TO: 1. LIMIT YOUR CONTACT WITH INFECTED PEOPLE. 2. DO NOT SHARE FOOD AND DRINKS WITH OTHERS. 3. WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY. 4. TAKE WARM SHOWERS FREQUENTLY. 5. EAT PROPERLY AND GET ENOUGH SLEEP. WHAT ARE ANTIBIOTICS? AN ANTIBIOTIC IS A DRUG THAT CAN KILL BACTERIA OR SLOW THE GROWTH OF BACTERIA. HOW TO USE ANTIBIOTICS IF YOU TAKE AN ANTIBIOTIC, YOU SHOULD FOLLOW THE DOCTOR’S INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. TAKE ALL OF THE ANTIBIOTICS. THIS WILL ENSURE THAT YOU GET RID OF ALL OF THE BACTERIA THAT ARE MAKING YOU SICK. STREP THROAT IS CAUSED BY STREPTOCOCCUS. SINUSITIS CLOGGING OF THE SINUSES CAN CAUSE THE SINUSES TO BECOME INFLAMED, WHICH MEANS THAT THEY SWELL AND BEGIN TO HURT. THIS INFLAMMATION OF A SINUS IS CALLED SINUSITIS.
