 1607 Jamestown is established in Virginia First successful English colony  Settlers expanded through out the Chesapeake bay  Colonists had their rights as English Citizens guaranteed in their charter  Set up a legislative government known as the House of Burgess

 Northern Colonies  Set up by Puritans Mayflower compact set a guideline for self government  4 colonies 1. Massachusetts 2. Rhode Island 3. Connecticut 4. New Hampshire

 Middle colonies offered religious tolerance  Had a strong economy: wheat New York New Jersey Pennsylvania  Southern Colonies  Relied heavily on slaves  Plantation style farms Virginia maryland Georgia North Carolina South Carolina
