Six Teenagers Does what they eat affect how they feel?

Maurice likes to eat whatever is fast and easy to get. He doesn’t have the time or desire to fix meal, so he eats on the run.

Here’s what Maurice eats: Breakfast- coffee and poptart Lunch- hamburger, fries, and a Coke Dinner-Box of macaroni&cheese, and Pepsi Snacks- peanut butter cups and Pepsi

What do you think? Does fast and easy food make it healthy? Or unhealthy? Or is it more complicated than that? What do you think he gets too much of? What do you think he gets too little of?

Next, meet Cecil

Cecil can’t understand why he’s a bit overweight. He eats a strict low-fat diet. He even reads food labels to be sure that everything he eats is low fat.

Here’s Cecil’s meals: Breakfast- cereal w/ skim milk, coffee Lunch- grilled chicken sandwich, 3 medium fat free blueberry muffins, Pepsi Dinner- orange-apple-skim milk smoothie Snacks- 4 indiv. serv. pk. baked potato chips

What do you think? Does eating low fat foods keep your calories down? Does eating less fat mean that you’re eating healthy foods?

Next is Aloysius.

Aloysius is a bit lazy. So, he just looks for food to eat whenever he gets hungry.

Here is Aloysius’ list of foods: Breakfast- none- he’s rather sleep! Lunch- French fries Dinner- 4 doughnuts, Coke, potato chips Snacks: licorice, Coke, pepperoni pizza

What do you think? Aloysius eats no breakfast and only French fries for lunch. Does that mean that he eats less over the rest of the day?

Now, here’s Violet.

Violet feels that she’s fat. After all, she’s 5’6” tall and 102 pounds. She wants to be a two-digit weight.

Here’s what Violet eats: Breakfast- 3 cups of hot tea Lunch- carrot and celery sticks, diet Pepsi Dinner- 1 oz. chicken, carrot/celery, water Snacks- diet Pepsi, carrot sticks, water

What do you think? Violet is just trying to be thin. Her friends are worried about her. They tell her that she should eat more. But Violet thinks that eating more will make her fat. Who is right?

Here’s Bertha.

Bertha likes to eat fast and cheap. She’s very fond of Ramen noodle soup. She figures that if it’s hot then it has to be nutritious.

Here’s what Bertha eats: Breakfast- coffee and poptarts Lunch- Ramen noodle soup, crackers, Pepsi Dinner- spaghetti-o’s, pretzels, milk Snacks- Ramen noodle soup, crackers, Coke

What do you think? Bertha feels that she’s eating healthy because she’s eating hot food that she cooked herself. (even if it’s out of a can or a bag!) Is convenience food good or bad? Or is it more complicated than that?

Here is Isadora.

Isodora watches what she eats. She knows that if she wants to feel the best she can tomorrow, then she has to watch what she eats today!

Here’s what Isadora ate: Breakfast- oatmeal w/blueberries and milk, coffee Lunch-spinach salad w/chicken&strawberries, multigrain muffin Dinner- salmon, rice, green beans, corn bread, milk Snacks- popcorn, string cheese, iced tea

What do you think? It looks like a lot of food! Does this mean that she is consuming too many calories? Do healthy foods make any real difference in how many nutrients she consumes?

Now that you know these teens, record their food. Go to Click on “SuperTracker,” and register with your information. You’ll be tracking the food of only one of these teens. When searching foods, type in the bolded word. Then choose the type &quantity and for what meal.
