Theme: Bad things happen to good people. Karson Kern Romeo and Juliet Theme Test Definition: Central Idea of a work of literature.

Explanation and Connection: Mercutio never did anything wrong to deserve to be killed he was trying to do the right thing and fight for Romeo. Mercutio was doing just fine, then Romeo decided to jump in the middle to try and stop the fight. Giving Tybalt a clear shot, stabbing Mercutio under Romeos arm. Mercutio didn’t deserve to die but “Bad things happen to good people.”. Summary: Tybalt wanted to fight Romeo. But Romeo didn’t want to fight so Mercutio fought for Romeo getting himself killed. Direct Quote: “A braggart, a rogue, a villain, that fights by the book of arithmetic! Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm.”

Explanation and Connection: The prince never did anything to have toe get his cousin killed. Plus there was nothing that the prince could do to take his death back. All he could do is put the person who started this mess to death as punishment. He didn’t deserve it but “bad things happen to good people.”. Summary: Mercutio is both in the Capulet and Montague families. He is a cousin of the prince. When Mercutio was killed. It was a murder of a royal family member. Direct Quote: “Romeo slew him; he slew Mercutio. Who now the prince of his blood duth owe?”

Explanation and Connection: Paris saying his goodbye to Juliet. While Romeo was going to drink poison and to die with Juliet. But Paris had to do the right thing and take Romeo in for being in Verona after his banishment. Romeo told Paris to leave so he could die with Juliet. But, Paris didn’t leave; making them fight and during the fight Paris got stabbed by Romeo killing him. Summary: Paris was in the cemetery with Juliet. While Romeo showed up to die with Juliet. Paris was being a good person and was going to do the right thing and turn Romeo in. Paris was in the wrong place at the wrong time trying to do the right thing. Direct Quote: “Obey, and go with me; for thou must die. I must indeed; and therefore came I hither.”
