The CTE PLC

What is CTE? Career and Technical Education At Scotia- Glenville this includes the Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and the Technology Departments Presently we are three separate departments that deliver over thirty individual courses ( electives) with one third offering college credit

Goal of the CTE PLC Explore ways CTE could increase the graduation rate Investigate ways SG CTE can prepare students to be both college and career ready MEMBERS- All CTE Teachers Sarah Hoffman and Cindy Steadwell

Our first step was to examine current research on the effectiveness of CTE on raising graduation rates. Then we evaluated the possible CTE options approved by the state while examining quality high school CTE programs throughout the state.

After collecting information we began the process of developing CTE endorsements for our students.

Some information we’ve pondered……… The fact….. 27% of people with post-secondary licenses or certificates-credentials short of an associate’s degree—earn more than the average bachelor’s degree recipient …………

Only about 4 in 10 Americans have obtained either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree by their mid-twenties….

Only 56 percent of those enrolling in a four year college attain a bachelor’s degree after six years of college and only 30% will earn an associate’s degree in three years of college……

The Silent Epidemic “81 percent of high school dropouts felt that efforts to make high school more relevant – including the opportunity for real-world learning and connecting school to work –would have encouraged them to stay in school………..”

From Harvard’s “Pathways to Prosperity” The “college for all” rhetoric that has been so much a part of current education reform movement needs to be significantly broadened to become ” post high school credentials for all”.

The Persistence of “The Forgotten Half” “Large numbers say they dropped out because they felt their classes were not interesting and that high school was unrelentingly boring. In other words, they didn’t believe high school was relevant, or providing a pathway to achieve their dreams. This is the silent epidemic that is undermining education.” …..From The Silent Epidemic
