Professionalism Operation: Work Ethic Alyssa Ruiz

Overview What is work ethic? Good vs. Bad Attendance Dependability Teamwork and Cooperation Attire

What is this “work ethic” you speak of? Definition: a belief in the moral benefit and importance of work and its inherent ability to strengthen character. Do you believe in your work? Are assignments put off until the last minute? Do you value your work? Do you bring your personal problems to work?

Good vs. Bad Jim arrives to work on time, in uniform and friendly greets his coworkers. Jim’s workplace is clean, organized and work is done efficiently in both time and quality. When a coworker is falling behind or doesn’t understand a task, Jim offers his assistance. Tom has called in sick for the past few days and arrives to work 10 minutes late. When a coworker tells him “good morning” he does not respond, then spends 15 minutes chatting while getting coffee. He has to be told, yet again, to tuck in his shirt and pull up his pants.

Attendance Workplace attendance policies o They exist for a reason o Disciplinary actions What’s the big deal? o Poor attendance not only reflects you, if affects the rest of the company. o The show must go on without you. So, who will be doing YOUR work? Plan Plan Plan o Everyone needs time off, make plans ahead of time. o We all run late, traffic is unexpectedly bad sometimes – call your supervisor and let them know (just don’t make a habit of it) o We all run late, traffic is unexpectedly bad sometimes – call your supervisor and let them know

Dependability Be a person your coworkers and supervisors can count on o Complete tasks promptly and correctly o Be honest, respectful and willing to help What happens when you’re dependable, you ask? o You earn respect of fellow employees and managers o You become an essential part of the company o Most importantly, JOB SECURITY! Remember, attitudes are contagious.

Teamwork & Cooperation In a manufacturing environment, teamwork is crucial. Don’t be the weak link in the chain! Teams get projects done more efficiently and timely in comparison to one person. Collaboration = innovative ideas = productivity

Importance of Attire o Safety o Company image o Look professional o You take pride in your work appearance Examples o No baggy clothing o Clean, well-groomed. o Required PPE (personal protective equipment) o If uniforms are required, keep them clean and professional looking o Having too much skin exposed is not only a distraction, but a safety risk. o Appropriate footwear. Appropriate Attire

PPE in the Workplace

So, how would you rate your work ethic?
