AIMS To develop awareness and understanding of core Safeguarding and Child Protection issues To demonstrate the process of reporting and referral To instil confidence and knowledge to staff and raise awareness of roles and responsibilities

Outcomes Demonstrate knowledge of procedure underpinning child protection Define categories of Child Abuse in line with Government Guidelines Know how to report and/or refer to external multi agencies

In March 2011 Approximately 46,700 children in the UK were known to be at risk of abuse One in four young adults (25.3%) were severely maltreated during childhood. CATEGORIES OF ABUSE PHYSICAL EMOTIONAL NEGLECT SEXUAL

DEFINITIONS Physical Abuse Physical abuse may involve hitting, shaking, throwing, poisoning, burning or scalding, drowning, suffocating or otherwise causing physical harm to a child Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse is the persistent emotional ill treatment of a child such as to cause severe and persistent effects on the child’s emotional development Sexual abuse Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities, including prostitution, whether or not s/he is aware of what is happening Neglect Neglect involves the persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child’s health and development

IF A CHILD/YOUNG PERSON TELLS YOU SOMETHING AND YOU ARE CONCERNED Write down what they say in their own words (include time and date) Listen carefully, reassure and tell them they have done the right thing. Explain that you cannot keep the disclosure to yourself, you have a duty to report it immediately. Complete the SG incident report form at the time of the disclosure using codes for confidentiality purposes.SG incident report form Hand the report to the Campus Director - Designated Person or Head of Learner Services - Designated Officer, at the earliest opportunity If you are unsure ring Social Services for advice Out of hours (Blaenau Gwent) In emergencies ring the Police on
