Venue: PANDON ROOM CIVIC CENTRE NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE NE1 4PU 9.00AM PM Cost: £20 per delegate The department of Race & Health Strategy at Newcastle, North Tyneside & Northumberland Mental Health NHS Trust exists to develop a Trust-wide strategy that creates for all communities, equal access especially people from ethnic minority backgrounds, disadvantaged groups and people with disabilities to ensure the Trust is compliant with relevant legislation and national directives. Hence we are delighted to be co-ordinating this seminar. Who is it for: People who are working with asylum seekers and refugees and would like to share good practice with colleagues nationally. Background: the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 provided the legislation to disperse asylum seekers out of the southeast to cluster areas throughout the United Kingdom. Dispersal is managed by a new Home Office Department, the National Asylum Support Service (NASS). NASS began to disperse asylum seekers from 3 rd April This has had a massive impact on services throughout the country in these cluster areas. At the CPHVA conference in October 2000, a fringe meeting “Working with Asylum Seekers” brought people together who were interested in setting up a national network for people working with asylum seekers. This seminar is the follow-on to that meeting and will provide the basis of the national group. To allow delegates to have the opportunity to share experiences from other areas, can you please send no more than one side A4 (font size point 12). Outline the things which are working well and those which are not in your area. This information will form part of a file for distribution. As places are limited, they will be allocated on a first come first service basis. Please complete the tear-off slip and return it with a cheque for £20 to the address indicated over leaf. Packs will be sent out 2 weeks before the event with contact details for other delegates to facilitate car sharing or travelling together. Please indicate if you do not wish your details to be included. If you require further information please contact Susan Donnelly, Health Visitor for Asylum Seekers, 2 Jesmond Road West, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4PQ. Tel: OR Sultana Kimti, Snr.
