Kickstart is a youth entrepreneurship programme implemented in: – South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland & Tanzania The programme funds youth owned businesses through –Business training, seed capital, post investment support (mentoring and coaching) Entrepreneurs with the strongest business case win grant funding Business requirements are paid directly to suppliers by SABMiller The programme is intended to empower the youth to create their own jobs 2
© SABMiller plc 2010 Kickstart’s desired outputs The programme is aimed at creating a culture of entrepreneurship in young people by promoting business awareness and material support through: –Developing business skills through training –Providing grants as start-up capital (new businesses ) or –Grants to support expansion of existing businesses –Providing post investment support (mentoring & coaching) 3
© SABMiller plc 2010 The mechanics &What needs to be considered… Kickstart is implemented across the country and is not region or district based : – Applications drawn across the country –Everyone has a fair and equal chance The programme uses non executive, external independent, adjudicators to –Give credibility to the programme –Shield management from excessive expectations from politicians –Ensure credibility is perceived and seen to be practiced The process of Kickstart needs to be well articulated to the media and the public to; –Set & align expectations of contestants & stakeholders 4
© SABMiller plc 2010 Qualifying businesses All legally permissible businesses in accordance with country laws are allowed to participate in Kickstart Kickstart is designed for 2 types of businesses that are small scale –Start ups (New business concepts that have not yet taken off) & –Small scale businesses that needs capital injection to grow their scale Kickstart accepts all types of businesses and is not sector specific 5 Kickstart criteria & rules (Businesses)
