Do Now The Great Wall of China runs for 5,500.3 miles. How long is this in feet? You’re supposed to drink 64 fl oz (8 glasses) of water everyday. How much is this in quarts? In gallons?

Review U.S. Units of Measure Originally known as the English System of Measurement …Until the English themselves switched to the Metric System leaving the U.S. the only industrialized nation still using the old system The English system of measurement grew out of the creative way that people measured for themselves

The Metric System Created 200 years ago by French scientists to simplify measurement In the metric system, each kind of measure – length, mass, capacity – has one basic unit of measure Length: MeterMass: GramCapacity: Liter Smaller units decrease by factors of 10 (decimal moves left) Larger units increase by factors of 10 (decimal moves right) Example: My height: 1.7 meters 0.17 decimeters hectometers kilometers 17.0 decimeters 170 centimeters 1,700 millimeters

Converting Between Metric Units Multiply by the ratio of units (see conversion sheet) To convert between units, keep your old units diagonal to each other with the new units on top For example: Convert 450 centimeters to meters.

Practice Conversions Convert 450 centimeters to millimeters Convert 12 kilograms to grams Convert 200 centiliters to liters Convert 3 kilometers to centimeters
