Today’s verses Acts 6 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’

Today’s verses Acts 6 5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. 8 Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.

Today’s verses Acts 6 9 Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)-Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, 10 but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. 11 Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, 'We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.' 12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. Today’s verses Acts 6 13 They produced false witnesses, who testified, 'This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. 14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.' 15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

This Week’s Verse The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. (Acts 5:41-42)

This Week’s Conversation A: Have you encountered someone who is so indifferent about the gospel? B: Oh, sure! I have seen many! No matter what I say to them they don’t seem to care about the message. A: Exactly. Even though the message is crystal clear, it cannot penetrate their callous heart. B: What can be done about these people? A: Only thing I can think of is to pray for them. B: Right. I agree. We should pray for those who are indifferent about the gospel that someday their heart will soften and receive the message. A: Let’s pray for them together. B: Yes, let’s pray together.

B: I don’t like big churches because often there are too many hierarchies and ranks among church members? A: Does that bother you? B: Sometimes. I believe that a church should be a place where believers from any social status can come as one and worship together. A: I think I know what you mean. Many churches are just a place for socializing. B: Right. That’s pretty sad. A: You should try to avoid those churches. B: I know.

Christians, someone once said, become very unchristian when they get organized. Others would structure the church like a Fortune 500 corporation, complete with detailed organizational charts, job descriptions, boards, committees, and subcommittees. Both extremes are wrong: the church is neither a highly contrived corporation nor a loose commune, but an organism. Just as living organisms require structure and organization to function, so does the church. Introduction

The early church set the example of a living, interdependent organism. The church’s explosive growth had brought with it the need for further organization. That illustrates an important principle: Biblical church organization always responds to needs and to what the Spirit is already doing. In Acts chapter 6, the church faced its first serious organizational crisis. From this first organizational meeting four features stand out: the reason, the requirements, the roster, and the results. At the very time that the disciples were increasing in number another problem arose. It was related to their rapid growth. There must have been more than 20,000 in the Jerusalem church at this point. As a result, the apostles could no longer handle the entire load of caring for the congregation. Further organization was needed. There was another reason for the church to organize. They had saturated Jerusalem with the gospel message and even begun to reach out to the surrounding region. Now they were poised to evangelize Samaria and the Gentile world. To do so successfully required further planning and structuring of the assembly. 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’

In a congregation of that size, it was inevitable that someone’s needs would be overlooked. Having failed to stop the church through persecution or corruption, Satan tried a third tactic. He sought to create dissension within the church. A church racked by internal conflict finds its message lost in conflict, its energy dissipated. 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’

The Hellenistic Jews were those of the Diaspora. Unlike native or Palestinian Hebrews, their native language was Greek. They were considered as second-class Israelites, especially by the Pharisees. Some of that racial and cultural hostility carried over into the church. They were a minority in the church, which helps explain why their needs were overlooked. Care of widows was traditional in Jewish society. Paul later defined it as the responsibility of the church (1 Tim. 5:3). 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’

The Hellenists’ complaint eventually came to the attention of the twelve. They summoned the congregation of the disciples to seek a solution. While the apostles recognized the problem, they did not have the time to handle it. 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’

To involve themselves in the details of serving meals and handling money matters would take them away from their calling. The apostles knew their priority was praying, preaching, teaching, and studying the Word. The apostles’ pledge to devote themselves to their ministry set the pattern for all to follow. 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’
