Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? THE THIRD COMMANDMENT (God’s Word) Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? We should fear and love God that we do not despise preaching and his Word, but regard it as holy, and gladly hear and learn it. Lesson 10

How does God want us to honor his word?

1. Why does God want us to receive his Word eagerly? Leviticus 23:3 “ ‘There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord.

1. Why does God want us to receive his Word eagerly? Colossians 2:16-17a Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. REST Sabbath Saturday shadow or picture

1. Why does God want us to receive his Word eagerly? Colossians 3:16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Study, pray, sing

2. How does God want us to honor his Word? Psalm 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Gladly hear God’s Word

Gladly learn God’s Word 2. How does God want us to honor his Word? Psalm 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” John 6:45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. Gladly learn God’s Word

2. How does God want us to honor his Word? John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Believe God’s Word

2. How does God want us to honor his Word? Luke 11:28 [Jesus] replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” Obey God’s Word

3. When do we sin against this commandment? Hebrews 10:25 … not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Refuse to hear

Let other things be more important 3. When do we sin against this commandment? Luke 14:16-24 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’ “ ‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’ “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’ ” Let other things be more important

3. When do we sin against this commandment? Hebrews 4:2 For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Refuse to believe

3. When do we sin against this commandment? James 1:22-24 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. Refuse to obey

APPLICATIONS Bob says that he has good intentions of taking some time each evening to read God’s word, but so often he forgets, turns the TV on, and ends up watching it instead. He’s not happy with himself about this, and he asks you what he should do. What are some things you might suggest?

APPLICATIONS Agree or Disagree? It’s ok to miss church if the only job you can get to support yourself requires that you work on Sundays.

APPLICATIONS What’s wrong here? Teri says that she doesn’t have to go to Bible class or read the Bible at home because she gets all the spiritual strength she needs from the Sunday worship service.

Aim: How does God want us to honor his word? God wants us to honor his word by hearing, reading, learning, believing, and obeying it gladly and regularly.
