Standards & Objective: SPI 0807.5.1 Use a simple classification key to identify an unknown organism. Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism? TOC: # 17. Dichotomous Key & Branching Diagram Notes LEVELS RACE

What is a Dichotomous Key? Definition A dichotomous key is a tool that uses a series of paired statements to help someone identify the name of an organism when they are looking at the organism’s features. Purpose The purpose of the key is to name a creature. Sounds Like “Di-” means two. “Dichotomous” means divided into two parts. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

How to work a Dichotomous Key Step 1: Select the organism (Hint: look at this organism the entire time you are answering questions/ statements). Step 2: ALWAYS start at the first set of questions/ statements (1a and 1b). Step 3: Once you answer the questions/ statements, follow the directions to the next set of questions/ statements. Step 4: Continue answering statements until you reach a name. This is the scientific name. It should be a 2 part name: Genus species. Step 5: Select the next organism and repeat steps 2-4. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Whole Class Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Group Practice Fungus Classification Key 1 a. Grows shelf-like on woon.........................go to 2 b. Grows on a stem out of the ground............go to 3 2 a. Pattern of semi-circular stripes..................turkey tail b. No pattern of stripes or dots....................beefsteak 3 a. Has a round cap......................................fly agraric b. Has an irregularl shaped cap....................go to 4 4 a. Cap is funnel-shaped...............................golden chanterelle b.Cap is brain shaped.................................common morel Based on the key above, which fungus is shown? A.turkey tail B.beefsteak C.golden chanterelle D.common morel Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

What is a Branching Diagram? Definition A branching diagram is a diagram that shows the relationships among biological species based upon similarities and differences in the physical and/or genetic characteristics. Purpose The purpose of a branching diagram is to examine the relationship and common characteristics between organisms. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Whole Class Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Bell Work 9/15/15 1.Students on a field trip visited a farm. The teacher gave the students a classification key to help them identify some of the farm animals. The students observed a furry animal with four legs. The animal had hoofed feet and no horns. According to the key, which animal did the students find? A. Anas platyrhynchos B. Gallus gallus domesticus C. Bos taurus D. Equus ferus caballus

Standards & Objective: SPI 0807.5.1 Use a simple classification key to identify an unknown organism. Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism? TOC: # 18. Norns # 19. Smiley Faces

Norns- Group Work Norns belong to the genus Norno and can be divided into eight species that are generally located in specific regions of the world. Use the dichotomous key to identify the Norns below. Write their complete scientific name (Genus + species) in the blank.

Norns Answers

Using a Dichotomous Key Smiley Face Emoticons Using a Dichotomous Key

Creating a Dichotomous Key 1. Always start by looking at the physical characteristics (what you can see) of your objects. Look for similarities and differences. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Creating a Dichotomous Key 2. Identify one characteristic some members of the group have and others do not. Example: 1. a. Shape is green…………………. Go to 2. b. Shape is not green…………………. Go to 3. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Creating a Dichotomous Key 3. Separate the things that have the first characteristic from the things that do not. Example: 1. a. Shape is green …………………. Go to 2. b. Shape is not green …………………. Go to 3. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

4. Move on with the next steps by finding other factors that are similar and different. Example: 1. a. Shape is green …………………. Go to 2. b. Shape is not green …………………. Go to 3. 2. a. Shape is crescent- like …………………. Moon. b. Shape is not crescent- like …………………. Pie. 3. a. Shape is solid color …………………. Go to 4. b. Shape is not solid color …………………. Smiley face. 4. a. Shape has three angles …………………. Triangle. b. Shape has more than three angles …………………. Star. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Creating a Dichotomous Key So again, the steps are… 1. Always start by looking at the physical characteristics (what you can see) of your objects. Look for similarities and differences. 2. Identify one characteristic some members of the group have and others do not. 3. Separate the things that have the first characteristic from the things that do not. 4. Move on with the next steps by finding other factors that are similar and different. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Review Group Norms Group norms: Only talk within your own group Every group member will receive a separate grade. Every group member contributes a written product and their thoughts. We value others’ ideas and thoughts. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Create a Dichotomous Key Now you will create a dichotomous key in your group. Every group member will work on the same idea, but every individual needs their own written key. You will assign each school supply a different “code name.” One group member should write code names on a separate sheet of paper. Example: A pencil might be called whatyacallit in your group. At the end, make sure that your key makes sense by going through the steps for each school supply and seeing that your item matches your code name. If you have remaining time, try to incorporate additional school supplies that you have with you into your key. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

Exit Ticket Explain the way that your group decided to create your dichotomous key. Write a minimum of 3 sentences. On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being none and 5 being rockstar, how well would you rate your understanding of dichotomous keys after today? On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being none and 5 being rockstar, how well would you rate your ability to create a dichotomous key after today? Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?
