HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA By Darcy Hennessey Poverty in Britain A new land The journey freedom The aboriginals gold

POVERTY IN BRITAIN  In the 1700 Britain suffered a great poverty, which led to people stealing to survive. which led to overcrowded prisons.

A NEW LAND  Britain needed a new place to put their prisoners, and since America would not take any more the queen Victoria ordered someone to find a new land.

CAPTAIN COOK  In 1770 a man named captain cook found a new land it was mostly desert but had a descent amount of liveable land he called the “Australia ”

THE JOURNEY  The journey from Britain to Australia took nine months. It was a harsh journey and the convicts were only fed rations ( scraps ) for food and were whipped a frequently.

THE SENTENCE  When the convicts arrived they were put in newly built prisons. Depending on the crime they committed they were subjected to a sentence of around a few months to a dozen years.

FREEDOM  When a prisoner had payed their debt they had a choice of going home or staying in Australia. Some went back to Britain but others loved the new land so much they decided to stay.

THE ABORIGINALS  There is no arguing that the aboriginals were treated unfairly. Some were tricked or scammed out of there land. Some had there children taken away to learn the way of the white man. Some were even killed.

GOLD  More and more people were coming to Australia but what really brought people in was when they found gold. Every body was coming from around the world to Australia for some precious gold. Even if finding gold was more difficult than the thought.
