Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23 rd September FÓRUM OCEANO AQUACULTURE is one of the 5 pillars from the Blue Growth Strategy “The Commission intends to boost aquaculture through the Common Fisheries Policy reform, and has published Strategic Guidelines presenting common priorities and general objectives at EU level.” European Union aquaculture produces around 1.25 million tonnes, with a total value of EUR 3.6 billion. [Almost all of EU aquaculture production is consumed in Europe] Its share of total world aquaculture production is 1.5 % (8 th ) in terms of volume and just under 4 % (7 th ) in terms of value. Origin of aquaculture products consumed in the EU: 43% from EU; 57% Non-EU countries [Norway is the EU’s principal supplier ] “In Europe, aquaculture accounts for about 20% of fish production and directly employs some people. EU aquaculture is renowned for its high quality, sustainability and consumer protection standards.” Aquaculture & Blue Growth
Frederico Ferreira, Cork, 23 rd September FÓRUM OCEANO Global aquaculture production has grown by an average 8% per year for the last decade; production within the EU has decreased by approximately 10% Europe requires a sustainable aquaculture sector capable of contributing to the current and future global demands for seafood. [23.1 kg per person - Average Seafood consumption per year in the EU ] Lack of available maritime space for aquaculture activities should be overcome by identifying the most suitable sites The production of farmed aquatic animals and the development of farming equipment must be supported by the most advanced R&D as well as innovative technology Aquaculture demands Testa e Cunhas Feufar
