REVIEW  What were the years of Mozart?  Where was Mozart born?  Who was Mozart’s first teacher?  What was Mozart’s primary instrument?  Mozart was considered a childhood prodigy, what age did he start composing at?  Which famous piece did Mozart transcribe after hearing it only twice?

EMPLOYMENT  Upon returning from Italy in 1773, Mozart was employed as a court musician by Prince Collerdo of Salzburg  Here, Mozart cultivated his skills in writing in many genres from symphonies to minor operas  In 1775, Mozart found a knack for writing violin concertos; writing 5 in this year. K. 216, K. 218, and K. 219     Following his stint in writing violin concerto’s, Mozart turned to writing Piano Concerto’s. K. 271 in E flat major is considered to be a major triumph in his career 

EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED  1777, Mozart resigns from Salzburg and seeks employment in Aubsburg, Mannheim, Paris and Munich  Mannheim proved to be an excellent place to meet contemporary composers of that time; nothing came to fruition in regards to employment unfortunately  Mozart continued to Paris and fell into debt and pawned many of his possessions  Eventually returns to Salzburg in 1779 and takes up a position court organist and Kapellmeister  Wrote two notable works: A minor piano sonata and the Paris Symphony  

TERMS TO KNOW  Galant style – created in opposition to the strictness of the Baroque style, light elegance is emphasized as opposed to the dignified seriousness of the Baroque.  Period – A musical statement, made up of two or more phrases and a cadence.  Phrase – A musical idea; a natural unit of a melodic line.  Cadence – The melodic or harmonic ending of a piece or the sections or phrases within. VIENNA  In 1781, Mozart has a major argument with Prince-Archbishop Collerdo  Mozart “resigns” from his position and heads to Vienna (considered to be the best career move)  Became known in Vienna as the best pianist  Composed his first majorly successful opera, Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abuction from the Seraglio.  

PERSONAL LIFE  In 1782, Mozart marries Constanze Lange, and they had 6 children, 2 of which survived  In 1783, Mozart began studying the fugal works of Handel and Bach and results in motives in Die Zauberflöte and Symphony 41   Do you hear the fugue?

MOZART MEETS HAYDN  In 1783, Mozart completes his Mass in C minor with Constanze singing the soprano solos     In 1784, Mozart meets Haydn and the two become great friends  Haydn offers Mozart supplemental lessons, but for the most part the two play music together  Mozart writes six string quartets dedicated to Haydn (K. 387, 421, 428, 458, 464 and 465)

PERFORMING CAREER  In 1785, Haydn told Leopald Mozart, “I tell you before God, and as an honest man, your son is the greatest composer known to me by person and repute, he has taste and what is more the greatest skill in composition.”  From , Mozart composed 3-4 new piano works each week and performed them all around Vienna  This led him into his second opera writing session from
