Learning Targets Students will apply an understanding of dramatic technique to Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Macbeth, Act V, scene v, p Soldiers are on their way to the castle when Macbeth hears _____. Macbeth reacts to the noise, thinking that the same noise may have once been startling to him, but now, wicked, slaughterous, and horrific thoughts are commonplace and no longer startle him. What was the scream symbolic of? – Seyton informs Macbeth Macbeth remarks this is not the most convenient time for this to happen. Then, his “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow” speech ensues, one of the most famous of Macbeth and of Shakespeare’s lines. – This signifies that life is filled with nothing (a walking shadow) it is meaningless…it’s an act, a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. (read together, lines 19-28, p. 397)

Macbeth, Act V, scene v, p Messenger arrives with some crazy news… “As I did stand my watch upon the hill,/ I looked toward Birnam, and anon, methought,/ The wood began to ___.” Macbeth feels tricked by the witches (but did THEY trick him?), and recounts what they’d told him, remarking that he “begins/ To doubt th’ equivocation of the fiend/ That lies like truth: “Fear not, till Birnam Wood/ Comes toward Dunsinane.” – Act III: “Damned be he that trust them (witches)” And he ends the scene with “at least we’ll die with harness on our back” (armor)

Macbeth, Act V, scene vi, p. 398 The soldiers are close enough, so Malcolm instructs the army to throw “your leavy screens down.” They prepare to fight with Macbeth and his “hired slaves”

Macbeth, Act V, Scene vii, p In the countryside, near the castle at Dunsinane Macbeth, alone, says: The have tied me to a stake; I cannot fly, But bearlike, I must fight the course. What’s he That was not born of woman? Such a one Am I to fear, or none. Macbeth battles Young Siward, after Siward questions what his name is. YS says “The devil himself could not pronounce a title/ More hateful to mine ear.” Macbeth responds, “No, nor more fearful.” They fight, and Macbeth slays Young Siward. Macbeth laughs, and says “Though wast born of woman” Macbeth and Macduff barely miss each other on the battlefield, and Macduff addresses the impending battle with Macbeth in lines – “I cannot strike at wretched kerns whose arms/Are hired to bear their staves. Either thou, Macbeth,/Or else my sword, with an unbattered edge, / I sheathe again undeeded.””
