About SYA Institutional Experience Founded in 1964, SYA has grown to be the most recognized and respected high school year-long study abroad program available. Integrated Programming The goals of second-language fluency and cultural awareness are met through rigorous academics, homestay experience, community involvement and travel.

SYA operates four fully-accredited schools in: Viterbo, Italy - 50 miles north of Rome Zaragoza, Spain - Midway between Barcelona and Madrid Rennes, France - Capital of Brittany 191 miles west of Paris Beijing, China - Capital with a population of 21 million Where is SYA?

Who Are SYA Students? More than 7,500 students from 1,100 independent and public high schools have attended SYA. Class of 2016: 239 students 136 high schools 32 states, 6 countries 191 juniors, 46 seniors

Inside the Classroom English and math are taught in English. France and Spain: All classes taught in French/Spanish by local, native teachers. Italy: Beginners welcome. Italian required, Latin and Greek offered. China: Beginners welcome. 2.5 credits of intensive Mandarin required. Focused on a deeper understanding of national culture, history and contemporary issues: People, Power & Politics Environmental Science – local focus Applied Agroecology Contemporary History of Spain through the Lens of its Cinema A Sampling of Classes Focused on global issues: Chinese Politics and Economics: China in a Fast-Changing World Political Science and Global Issues Global Citizenship in the 21st Century Macroeconomics and the Global Consumer

Outside the classroom Linguistic and cultural immersion happens 24/7, not just in the classroom. Formal and informal opportunities to connect with local and regional peers, from meeting afterschool to chat about current events, to visiting their schools and homes. Global Issues Network Conference in Luxembourg Model UN in Beijing, China, and Lyon, France Capstone: A month-long, college-level, interdisciplinary research project that includes group work, fieldwork and oral and written presentation.

Host Families A host family coordinator at each school: Carefully interviews and selects families Thoughtfully matches students with an appropriate family Oversees the relationship throughout the year Such a meaningful experience that SYA even has second-generation host families!

Co-Curriculars Art, dance, sports and more: Students are able to continue their passions or discover a new one. Authentic, local engagement: Whether teaching English to children, sharing stories at a retirement home or playing in a local orchestra. Each SYA school has an Activities Coordinator to help, plus funds for covering co-curricular fees.

Travel Educational Travel: School-guided day trips as well as overnights designed to tie in to the curriculum. Independent Travel: A privilege earned by students, allowing them to choose their destination and be responsible for their own planning and budgeting.
