In-Vitro Fertilization IVF In-Vitro Fertilization

What is IVF? In-Vitro means “in glass” Fertilization (joining of sperm & egg) occurs outside of the female’s body Often used to overcome infertility Expensive!!

The process of IVF

The process of IVF Stop normal menstrual cycle With drugs Stimulate follicle growth Hormone treatments FSH to stimulate follicle growth hCG for follicle maturation

The process of IVF Extract multiple eggs Sperm are injected into eggs Sperm are selected Seminal fluid is removed Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) Fertilization (hopefully) occurs In-Vitro

The process of IVF Zygote divides 6-8 cells or blastocyst Multiple embryos are implanted into uterus Increase chance of successful pregnancy Use a fine glass tube Test for pregnancy Keep fingers crossed

Causes of infertility Female Male Blocked Fallopian tubes Ova not maturing or being released Abnormality in uterus prevents implantation Male Unable to achieve erection or normal ejaculation Low sperm count or sperm are abnormal with slow motility Heat!! Laptop computers Blocked Vas deferens Antibodies in cervical mucus impair sperm

Impact of multiples birth Children born with multiples are often of lower birth weight & associated health risks Parents face more stress This can impact relationship with spouse and other siblings Multiples pregnancies with IVF are often discovered early Pregnancies are usually monitored Parents are informed of risks Parents can prepare/make informed decisions

Any questions?
