Virtualization History

Mainframes and Virtualization Virtualization is not a new technology: Introduced by IBM over 40 years ago Designed to run on mainframe computers Partitioned the physical machine/computer into multiple virtual machines Helped to improve resource utilization and ROI (Return on Investment)

Servers and Virtualization – Then… Individual physical server computers, the technology still in wide use today, have with some inherent drawbacks. Individual physical server computers: Were not originally designed for virtualization Are increasingly underutilized – 5-15% is typical usage of resources Waste space, power, cooling, maintenance, and administration time

Servers and Virtualization – …and Now Over the last six or seven years or so, server processors have gotten much faster and more affordable. Most processors today have 2, 4, 6, or even more, cores. Many servers today, can also typically support upwards of 100 GB of RAM and many TBs of storage Individual physical server technology is where virtualization software and technology thrives today.

Virtualization Levels Even though there are other types, or levels, of virtualization, for this training we are going to cover: Hardware level virtualization: –No OS (Operating System) required –Also called Bare Metal, and is typically used on servers Software, or Operating System, level virtualization: –OS required –Application that runs on top of an Operating System Desktop virtualization: –Requires Hardware level virtualization to use –Used to run a logical desktop on a physical machine 9

Hypervisors – Type 1 and Type 2 What is a Hypervisor? –Software, plain and simple Two types of Hypervisors: –Type 1 runs directly on the physical host hardware – also called “bare metal” Best suited for production environment –Type 2 runs on a commodity operating system such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, OS X Best suited for development environment

Who makes Type 1 Hypervisors? 11 VMware – vSphere Microsoft – Hyper-V Citrix – Xen Server

Who makes Type 2 Hypervisors? VMware: −VMware Workstation for Windows or Linux −VMware Fusion for MAC Parallels: − Workstation

Desktop Virtualization Often referred to as VDI: −Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Functionality unique to desktop virtualization is included: –Connection Broker to “check out” Virtual Desktop VMs

Why Virtualize?

How Virtualization Works

Physical Machine - Host Actual, physical box Where Hypervisor is installed Resources from Host machine are assigned to VMs: –Memory, NICs, CPU cores, etc.

Virtual Machine - Guest Each VM is an Isolated software container All individual VM components are Encapsulated (Encased together into one separate container for each VM) Behaves exactly like a physical computer Thinks it is a “real” computer

Virtual Machine Benefits: Encapsulation and Portability A VM is a set of files vs. an actual physical computer In addition to its own virtual hardware, each VM has its own operating system and applications (just like a physical computer) Encapsulation makes VMs portable and easy to manage File copy for moving, copying, cloning

Virtualization Machine Benefits: Isolation Isolation means: −Virtual machines on the same physical machine run independently of each other −Can run multiple, different operating systems on the same physical machine −Protected from each other −Equal to or better than applications running in a non-virtualized system

Virtual Machine Benefits: Hardware Independence and Compatibility Virtual machines are completely independent from underlying physical hardware Move a VM between different hardware brands and types without modification IBM Dell Cisco

What is a Virtual Infrastructure? Aggregate physical servers (hosts), network, and storage into a unified pool Drive greater flexibility and lower capital and operational costs
