mGeos COLLECT & SHARE M4DEV, Mobile Technologies for Development Kristoffer Rosberg , Hanoi,Vietnam Being efficiently able to provide health, educational and humanitarian aid or even most industrial service is critically dependent on knowing where to provide these services. Basic location information about points-of- interest (POIs), routes to them and areas to service are missing from the countries in most of need to improve public services. In particular, in developing countries, critical map and location information is largely incomplete, outdated or missing.

mGeos introduction Low cost mobile phones with GPS are entering the market with the capability of replacing both traditional pen&paper, and in many cases, dedicated GPS devices mGeos is an end-to-end solution for comprehensive data collection, management, visualisation and sharing mGeos is suitable for rapid low-cost deployment for areas such as health, wellbeing and sports humanitarian and environmental work, industry(forest/agriculture/infrastructure)

The Challenge In Africa, (digital) maps are often incomplete or unavailable. Example from Google Maps: Small place in North of Finland (Kittilä). All the connecting roads and village streets mapped and visible. Small place in South-East Kenya (Mubuko). Only name visible.

The Solution: mobile location information collection Point of Interest: E.g. location of a school: Go next to school, use the GPS-device to save the location. Save as category ”building” and name in e.g. ”Mukubo Secondary School”. Route: E.g. Road: Start recording with the GPS-device at the beginning of the road, walk/drive to the end point and save the route as category ”road” name name is e.g. ”Embu Road”. Area: E.g. Community boundary. Start recording an area at one point of the boundary, walk/drive around the community via the boundary and save the area as category ”community” and name it e.g. ”Kimadzo”. Additional information can be attached later by using internet browser (easier for editing and typing with larger screen, keyboard and mouse)
