Timeline of Student Needs August – 1 st Year  Transition to Medical School (Feeling Overwhelmed)  Reluctance to tweak study habits (This has always worked for me…)  Some students are trying to memorize everything (not sustainable) September – 1 st Year  Preparation for first set of major exams  Dealing with less than desired academic results December – 1 st Year  Transition from Anatomy/SFoM to Systems Courses  Coping with the failure of Anatomy and/or SFoM  Winter = lack of sunlight

Timeline of Student Needs, cont. Spring Term – 1 st Year  Transition from CPR course to NES course  Preparing for Remediation  Deciding how to spend their summer Second Year  Getting back into the rhythm of studying (first exam very early)  Board Prep is always on the brain How early and how often? USMLE? Which study materials should I use?  Clerkship placement can be source of anxiety

Advisor Communication and Intervention early – invite the students in Take inventory of how they’re doing  How are you feeling?  Are you keeping up?  Tell me about your daily/weekly schedule.  What are your most natural study habits?

Advisor Communication and Intervention Signs to watch for:  Are they picking up on basic learning objectives?  Are they comparing themselves to their peers?  Do they look or seem physically exhausted?  Do they seem ready to break down? Disappointing score on first exam  Reach out for a face-to-face meeting quickly  Motivation may now exist to change study habits  Emphasize that they still have time to recover
