Timeline of Student Needs August – 1 st Year Transition to Medical School (Feeling Overwhelmed) Reluctance to tweak study habits (This has always worked for me…) Some students are trying to memorize everything (not sustainable) September – 1 st Year Preparation for first set of major exams Dealing with less than desired academic results December – 1 st Year Transition from Anatomy/SFoM to Systems Courses Coping with the failure of Anatomy and/or SFoM Winter = lack of sunlight
Timeline of Student Needs, cont. Spring Term – 1 st Year Transition from CPR course to NES course Preparing for Remediation Deciding how to spend their summer Second Year Getting back into the rhythm of studying (first exam very early) Board Prep is always on the brain How early and how often? USMLE? Which study materials should I use? Clerkship placement can be source of anxiety
Advisor Communication and Intervention early – invite the students in Take inventory of how they’re doing How are you feeling? Are you keeping up? Tell me about your daily/weekly schedule. What are your most natural study habits?
Advisor Communication and Intervention Signs to watch for: Are they picking up on basic learning objectives? Are they comparing themselves to their peers? Do they look or seem physically exhausted? Do they seem ready to break down? Disappointing score on first exam Reach out for a face-to-face meeting quickly Motivation may now exist to change study habits Emphasize that they still have time to recover
