Aim of the research: Explore unemployment, including youth unemployment problems in Latvia after joining the European Union Research tasks: 1. Research Internet-based sources on unemployment and youth unemployment. 2. Explore unemployment spread across the EU and Latvia. 3. Find out what is the government’s program to reduce youth unemployment. 2

Definition of unemployment: Unemployment is a situation where people with the appropriate training and qualifications are seeking work in their specialty for appropriate payment, but can not find it. 3

What is a Youth Guarantee? Youth Guarantee is an initiative which aims to help young people to return to education or to enter the labour market in order to reduce youth unemployment and improve competitiveness in the labour market. 9

Conclusions After joining the European Union, Latvian unemployment rate fell, but during the financial crisis it rapidly increased. Since 2010 it has been slowly decreasing. Latvia has got one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the European Union countries. Since 2012, the state takes care of reducing youth unemployment in Latvia. On January 12 a new national youth policy program was approved which will encourage young unemployed people integrate into the labor market. 10
