Class Overview Semester One: Skill Focus- Reading strategies/improving reading skills: Non-fiction, current events, fiction, short stories Things Fall Apart (novel) Writing argumentative, expository essays Research paper (Humanities dept.) Speaking publicly/making claims and supporting them Socratic Seminars

Class Overview: Semester Two: Skill Focus: California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)?????? 350 English & 350 Math = Graduation! All prep done in class. But…  There’s an app for that! Reading: All Quiet on the Western Front & Night Writing: Synthesis- taking a variety of texts and making connections, claims, and providing support!

Year-Long Practices: SAT Vocabulary: 300 words total 10 words every Monday Quiz on 20 words every other Friday Vocabulary Charts to help with review- due same day as quiz. All the lists of words are on my website! How you can help: Ask to see their charts and quiz them 

Year-Long Practices: Outside Reading Books: Students will read one book of their choice each quarter. Books will be chosen based on student’s Lexile Reading Score Monday = reading days! Each Monday, a different reading skill will be taught and immediately put into practice. How you can help: Ask them about their book!

Grade Breakdown: Activities & Assignments: 15% Assessments: 30% Performance Tasks & Finals: 10% Writing: 30% Listening/Speaking (Collaboration): 15% *grades are weighted

How your child can be successful this year: Ask for help! I’m always available Be present in class and Listen- announcements, directions, assignment are covered in class. Make up work- If a student is not happy with the grade they’ve earned, they can talk to me about make up options. I want them to do well.  Communication- Keep open communication with teacher and student. Check SYNERGY! –Grades, homework assignments, due dates, directions, etc. It’s a one-stop-shop!

Class Overview: What is ELD Seminar/Support? Students were placed in this class because they still need to be reclassified as proficient English speakers Once they pass a test (CELDT), they will be considered Proficient in the English language. This class is designed to help students pass the CELDT test by improving their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

It’s also a “Homeroom” Learn about events at school and how to get involved ELD Buddy System Ask questions about school, grades, college, tutoring, problems with teachers or classes. Provide support for other classes Organizational skills: Binder organization, note taking, self-advocating, etc.

Reclassification {When your student is no longer considered an English learner} There are 4 requirements: Teacher Recommendation {Language Arts} Parent Approval Pass the CELDT Lexile Reading Score

Grade Weighting: Homework/Classwork: 50% Reading/Writing: 15% Listening/Speaking: 15% Test/Quiz: 10% Projects/Presentations/Participation: 10%
